Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

Get some plexiglass and some magnets it should be a good start, warm build environment is the key to quality prints.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

I believe Ian has posted the design he did for his S2 in plexi which you can see on his blog and youtube. Maybe it can be scaled up for the s3?

You can see it pretty clearly in the beginning of this video. http://youtu.be/9nd59afVuRY

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

Ians setup is great but like I said you can get away with 3 cut pieces of plexi or even cardboard as some have done

I'm still waiting to see if some folks design a better way to seal the temperature in. Perhaps a custom Solidoodle fume hood as well.

I have a lot of ideas but no free time

I feel your anxiety. Fingers crossed!

I hope mine makes the 10,000 mile journey unscathed when it finally ships.

With our custom foam padded inserts, it shouldn't be damaged en route.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

Anyone know where I can source 8x8 inch kapton squares? SD store doesn't seem to have any fitted for the SD3 and I'm going to need the break through it to level the Z axis.

You should do some reading on this site...(along with all the new people).

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

Thanks for the link to the thumbscrews, I will definitely be printing some of those out. As for the glass bed I was planning on doing that eventually but I would like to come up with a magnetic (maybe?) solution so I don't have to use clips. Thanks for the help and hopefully it will come leveled enough when I receive it to print out the thumbscrews.

I emailed solidoodle about 8x8 inch squares, and this was the answer I got today:

At this time we do not offer an 8 x 8 die cut square of Kapton, but are in process of getting a quote.

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

It would be good if the information/documentation about SD3 got updated. Also that clear distinctions were made in existing information between SD2 and SD3. Right now it's quite confusing. I have a SD3 on its way and when I try to read and learn it difficult to know what s applicable on SD3 or not. For example which software to use. It's written that Repetier must be used on SD3, however in the help documentations/tutorials references are referencing pronterface.

Howdy, I have the same suggestion, and hence have where potentially conflicting information has been presented tried to call it out in the thread. This is one reason I made some comments explicitly in the recent 'how big is the build platform' when they really were talking about the build bed/plate (not the platform) and also clarified for others that the 150x150 dimensions referenced were for the SD2 and not the SD3.

In practice, you need to keep in mind one thing with the SD3 : Its bed size is 200x200 and uses 209x200x200 as the build metrics (the extra 9 is the 'dump area' to the side of the bed).

Everything else - is the same basically. If you wanted to get picky about it, the other minor mod is that the cable loom on the SD3 runs through the center hole that on the SD2 was used for filament feeding (which didn't work so great anyway, and most went back over the top of the case anyway - so no great lose).

Re software, You really would only want to use repetier-host as its much easier to use really, pronterface was the only kid on the block at the time back in the initial SD2 days. You can however slice the model and save the gcode out of any slicer (skeinforge, but why?, kisslicer, etc) and then load it back into repetier-host.

So basically - all the info applies for the most part, except for tiny nuances like the SD3's bigger build area.

Hope that helps..

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

Yes, thank you that clarified it, the way it's written the wiki is a little confusing. Maybe your explaination above should be on the wiki? smile

Re: Introducing the Solidoodle 3

well mine just arrived, and i has a broken x-axis motor mount (it did look as though the box had been dropped, but the print for that slide and mount was not the best. i glued the break and used a hose clamp to reinforce the mount) and after a few prints i had y stepping issues and then the x-axis stepper driver started playing up, it seems to have lost its sense of direction, i tell it to move right and it move left or right or both and sounds HORRIBLE, so i swapped the x and y drivers and the fault followed the driver board. so its very likely the driver board..

i have sent 3 emails (one as each fault occurred lol) and had zero response (although its only been 24 hours)
