Topic: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Does anyone know of anywhere to get a glass, steel, or aluminium container for heated acetone vapour bathing?

Ideally it should:
be square to make the most of the solidoodle printer bed
have a lid
be available in the UK

Or could someone recommend an alternative, like a hot plate with accurate temperature control, and a suitable container?

I have the SD3 with the 200 x 200 x 200mm print area, so the container should need to be the right size for this.

So far all I've found is this, still waiting on price and where to buy. http://www.contacto.co.uk/artikel.aspx? … p;kat=3941

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Have you done a search here, there are probably a half dozen solutions to this problem already discussed in great detail here.  My suggestion would be the presto part finisher, seems the simplest solution.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

If you still want just a container, PP plastic is resistant. Look for recycling symbol 5.

yes, I did have a look but couldn't find anything. Feel free to post a link to a previous thread.

Would PP be resistant to the heat? Would it not melt?

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

In terms of heat I've poured boiling water into such a container to etch PCBs and experienced no problems. Acetone will pose no problem at half the temp.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Watching this with interest. we dont get prestos in the uk

what we do get though are slow cookers.

which is what i use just now, but find the lid does not seal to the outer body, so a lot of vapor is lost. I'm using the one from Asda for £15.

additionally, it fits a 6" object in but only just! so difficult to cook a large part!

however I want something else, maybe like a stainless steel pressure cooker,,,but that in itself doesnt come with a clear lid, so I'd have to open it to check on the parts then lose the vapour.... it would seal ok though!!

so maybe a rice cooker would be fine... I am actively looking for something right now, I'll post back any results and watch this thread with interest smile

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Some people are having success with a 1 gallon metal paint bucket from your local home store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc) they are just a couple dollars. They are a little small but sound like they work okay. I am looking for a metal 5 gallon bucket for mine. i plan on using an immersion heater to heat mine. There are some coffee warmers that will keep the heat just high enough to vaporize the acetone without risk. I plan to use a piece of glass over the top to view progress.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

For the UK guys I can recommend this from Argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p … 226309.htm
I bought mine when it was half price last month, the bowl is non stick, you can easily fit the largest print in it and all the plastic parts are PP so it is perfectly safe to use with acetone.

I've just posted a test over in the projects section http://www.soliforum.com/topic/1627/sea … ss/page/3/ which ends with me using this cooker.
If you want a load of high def images let me know and I can email them over as they are far to big to post.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

hey zarni, cheers for that !!

will this cooker comfortably take a 6" cube? In particular the height... how is the seal on the lid? does it let any vapour escape?

thanks!

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Pretty sure it will, but I'll check tonight and post a pic.

The seal is just the lip of the bowl with the lid resting inside (no rubber) so when you heat the acetone it will try and lift the lid if you have bunged up the vent hole. Any vapour condensing on the lid can only run back inside.

I have some model fuel tube that I put in the hole to allow it to vent out the window so never have any problems. Obviously if you seal the vent hole and constrain the lid something will go badly wrong when heating.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Ah, bugger.
Made a cardboard cube out of the box it came in.
It will fit in two dimensions but not height
http://imageshack.us/a/img854/6329/cookerside.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img854/9443/cookertop.jpg

That gap is around 30mm

BUT.
These are the cyberman legs I made which I scaled up 300% but had to reduce the height to get the to print and they fit in the bottom nicely.
http://imageshack.us/a/img138/2732/cyberlegs.jpg

So if you ever print a full 150mm cube then this won't work for smoothing, but in the real world I can't see a problem big enough to worry about.

Hmmmm, if it ever comes to that, I'll make up an extender ring, thick card should do for a one off, unless I can be bothered to go in the garage and cut a strip of steel.

Also good for cooking frogs smile

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Apparently if you raise the temperature to a boil in very small increments, they will smooth without even attempting to jump out!  smile

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Thanks for all the suggestions.

However, I am looking for a square container to put on the heated bed of my printer that would fit FULL SIZE prints. Then I could print and smooth with 1 machine, rather than buying an additional product like a rice cooker.

If I find anything in the UK I will post here.

8x8x8 glass containers could be tricky to find.  You might find something in ceramic (I think that would be ok for the acetone).

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

Whatever you find will probably not cost much less than a cooker.  The cooker is also more efficient.  I can have a smooth print 3 minutes after taking the Presto out of the cabinet.

I found this 8x8x8 glass wedding centerpiece vase that might do the trick.  You'd have to fashion your own lid if you want one, and the bottom might be a bit thick, but I hope this points you in the right direction.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

In the past I too was looking to just use the heatbed as it seemed like a simple solution just sitting there after the print, I then found a picture of a guy with a reprap doing just that with a big mason jar.
After some playing around with different solutions the "Presto" solution is so simple that having that about isn't a chore and I doubt I will change my mind. Ian was right in the first place, damn his forward thinking smile

One thing to be aware of is the amount of vapour heating acetone creates. The lid on my rice cooker can be covered in condensation very quickly if this was inside the printer you would need some pipework to vent it otherwise all sorts of bit would start to fail. Don't just think a lid will hold it, that'll be pushed off in no time.
Anyway as mine is setup up in my Ikea unit I can't do that anymore which is one reason I tried to get the vacuum method working.

Saying that though, working from Tealvince's suggestion if I could find the right bowl/lid combo I'll give it a try, I wonder if some Pyrex kitchen things would do the trick. I guess having a few different sizes wouldn't be too bad to store.
Also PP stuff should be OK, things like microwave bowls are sometimes PP but I'm not 100% about the direct heating of a bowl, it might go a bit funky rather quickly.......hmmm, that might need some testing.

One last thing, remember the thickness of the container base will make it just about impossible to do a real 6 inch cube as it will start to interfere with the print head, but as I have the same issue with my rice cooker that is a minor point.

Never say never, and never give up trying.

19

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

There are pyrex containers that have lids, but I'd make sure there was some way to vent some of the vapor and not put it under pressuer.

Re: Container for heated Acetone vapour-bath

I gave up and bought a rice cooker for about £20 new. I've not had it long, and I've not had great results as yet.

Did a search and read various threads about using a rice cooker, but nobody mentioned timings. Feel free to prove me wrong again cmetzel.

Zarni, how long do you leave each print in for? do you heat it up first? or put everything in cold, switch it on, and then leave it for 20 mins? My rice cooker looks to be the same as yours.

It seems to have 2 settings, 'cook' and 'warm'. And switched itself from cook to warm at some point. Not sure if this is temperature controlled or on a timers
