Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

What do you guys (specifically elmoret) suggest for upgrading the Workbench:
Kraken or Chimera?

I plan on enclosing the build area.  Because of this, I was leaning towards the Kraken for the water cooling.

A carriage re-design (adding 2 more LM10UU bearings for a total of 4) would also probably be in the mix.

Pro's/con's for each?

Side note: what would be involved in adding a 3rd or 4th extruder to the Workbench?

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

I'm not yet familiar with the Workbench - things I need to know:

- What board does it use? (printrboard, I think?) photo would be helpful.
- What hotends does it use? Photos would be really helpful here.

=====other questions you asked which I will help with after the above are answered====

I'd like to print composites of Nylon or PC with Support and possibly a 3rd filament (flexible).
I will enclose the build volume.

Kraken or Chimera?
I've seen the airtripper bowden projects, but what parts would I need to procure to make this happen beyond what is in the kits you sell?

Do you happen to know if a 3rd extruder would be a simple or complicated addition to the Workbench?

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

Hey guys, please give me some tips about retraction and how it's adjusted

In your slice profile you can adjust 2 things for retraction speed and distance.  My recommendation is to start by increasing speed if you are experiencing blobing.  If that doesn't help increase distance.  If you are experiencing holes then do the opposite.  Past that you'll need to provide details of the problems you're experiencing.

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

Attached are images of the boards in the machine, the top (daughter board: BED, Z-axis, BED TEMP), and the main (bottom board: X-axis, Y-axis, Extruder 1/RIGHT, Extruder 2/LEFT, and heaters/temp sensors for extruders, LED, and fans).  The Filament fan has its own port on the board (1st one on the top at the far right side).  The remaining fans are all always on via a splice from the next port below the filament fan.

I'll attached a second set of images of the hot ends.

Workbench (not so) hot ends.

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

Those hotends look exactly like SD4 hotends.

Yup, that's printrboard (rev E). Standard solidoodle fare. It will support dual v6s, and will also support chimera/cyclops. For the latter, you'd have to go bowden, or redesign the carriage/mount.

A third extruder would require upgrading that expansion board sitting on top of the printrboard, or upgrading the printrboard altogether. This should give you 3 total extruders:

http://printrbot.com/shop/printrbot-extrudrboard/

Finally, those hotend mounts look a lot like SD4 mounts, so you should be able to follow along with their threads on E3D installation, if you decide to go v6. If you go that route you'll need to either print mounts, or machine down the groove mount on the E3D heatsink to a smaller diameter. Both have been done before here on the forums.

How do you level the hotends on a Workbench? Those screws in front of the hotend?

I'm leaning towards the Kraken for the water since it'll be enclosed.  What are the benefits of the Chimera over the Kraken?

Cool, I will look into that board. Thanks!

I wish I could tell you how to level the hot ends but SD doesn't have ANY documentation for the Workbench online (and the box literally came with zero printed material) and it seems the E2 (left extruder) output from the mobo is faulty on my machine so I haven't even gotten far enough to level them.

Price, and air cooling (simpler).

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

Even if the enclosure gets to 50C, the airflow from the fan will be a cool breeze compared to extrusion temperatures.

86

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

The E3Dv6 starts to struggle with PLA at ambient much over 50C.

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

man Im glad I didnt try to get a workbench. Id rather have an SD3 modified into a better version cheaper. what happened to "all new extruders bla bla bla features much improved all metal etc...? Sam is just full of it. guess hes bilked thousands with same ol stuff why change huh. its like SD is stuck in 1st gear on 3D printer improvements. Ill just mod my SD2 and try some other printers for extra jobs. got the basics down after 2 years tweaking my old SD.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

This is simply awesome!!!!

Just a little teaser... More to come in a few days complete with a full set of assembly photos and instructions.
I definitely have some tweaking to really make this thing sing but for now it is functional and successfully completed the first print I tried.
Special thanks to IronMan for the code, Jagowilson for helping sort out the firmware side of things and AZERATE for moral support.

Re: E3D's Cyclops/Chimera - Dual Extrusion, Single Nozzle/Hotend

I uploaded some mounts and firmware to thingiverse if that can help someone.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:852608

This is for the Workbench WITH E3d cyclops hotend.

The hotend and changes i made to the printer works amazing! The cyclops print quality is perfect! 10/10 points from me.
