Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

While I still have Lightroom opened I cropped out a tighter, higher resolution picture of the Press' Hotend.

http://public.mlabs.us/SD_Press_Hotend.jpg

And here's the WB & WBA side by side to give scale.

SD Press - v1 (Pre-order) / RAMPs /w DRV8825's / Cyclops (25w) / Dual Bowden / Mk8 Gear / MK2b PCB Heat bed /w custom replacement Z / PEI Bed
SD2 / E3D v6 / Direct Drive / Mk8 Gear / RAMBo v1.3 / PEI Bed / Anti Z backlash mod / Ikea Expedite enclosure.
Both Driven by Octoprint (devel) via a RPi B+ / Neopixel status alerts / GPIO Controlled SSR / (SD2) 450 Watt PSU for remote power-up/shutdown.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Oh one thing to mention is that the WB has two (2) PSUs. This was a result of asking what kind and which are internal and external.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

np. I've been itching for actual images for a while. (vs. the 3D renderings they have now). So it a win, win for me. Helps me and gives you guys some images to help either confirm your purchases or help make a decision on one.

But as a side note. The 'Bed Leveling' probe on the WB/WBA are both 3D printed. And the hotends are basically from the SD4's (as of now, dunno if those printers are early designs and if that going to change for the final/gold master before production.) But if that is the final version- That basically means that this could be adapted to the SD4 and modded on a SD2/3. i.e. I have a SD2 with the SD4's extruder. This would make a fairly obtainable mod.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

the 3 pics on SD web site show a single fan mounting spot at front of both hot ends with a duct like made to cool plastic as it comes out for bridges etc. you have to save pic and zoom in to see it below the 2 extruder fans

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Ah you are talking about the Apprentice. Never noticed that image. The one demoed did not have a mount like that. And who knows if those images on the SD site are not mockups.

Here's a crop of just the WBA hotend.

Even if the mount is not stock. I am sure one can be made and added.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

yes, and also the vent fan at rear is not installed on site image but was at the show. this is what we have been complaining about all along. nobody wants to buy a pig in a poke. we need to see/know what is, isnt or maybe included with these printers. not buy then find out 2 months later you need to either mod yourself or buy next model for less money. or just keep what we have. this is why I still dont know if G-code cooling fan is operational on these printers/boards still. and the main thing I need. duel metal compact extruders is also in dought as this could ease support removal also allowing use of new exotic materials.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

am i the only one who has some serious concerns about these pictures? from what i can gather neither the press or the WB models have cooling fans for the hot ends *HEAD-DESK*

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

in general i avoid abs whereever possible due to the warpage factor and seeing as i use thse for a printing service i really cant afford the failure rates that ABS has.

was stoked that SD were coming out with dual extruder line as i could finally expand to parts with moving components with the dissolvable support.

seems that is now a pipe dream.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

also those hot ends look like the same ol part non plastic bulky ones that melt down at anything above 220 degrees C. not the all metal ones advertized that are half as bulky. so far dont see any real reason to "upgrade" even at lower prices. think Ill save my money for my SD2 mods rather than start over

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

i will never understand the lack of collaboration with some 3D printing companies. SD are clearly happy to cut corners on the extruder cause the current extruders lets be honest arent very good and not being able to get past 210 safely is a poor showing.

i would jump for joy if SD announced a collab deal with e3d or bulldog to offer upgrade packaages on the printer systems. even with an additional markup i would gladly pay if it meant i had ready out of box e3d extruders on my WB apprentice.

Would I pay more for proper hot ends?  Yes.  Would I have ordered knowing I was going to have to do that, maybe.  In the end, I'm sure I'll wind up upgrading to better hot ends quite shortly after ordering.

Right now, my hope is that someone designs an updated carriage that supports J-head hot ends and I can refit a pair of Picos in place of the stock ends in the near future.

I don't *need* to print exotic materials but I also don't want to have to deal with common materials taking out my hot end.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

so summary of my gripes SD
1) holding down the glass beds on the WB with bulldog clips - really? shaving 1" off each side of the build area is a shoddy misselling

2) Lack of cooling fans for extruders - means the " can print in PLA"  is yet another misselling.

3) lack of upgrading of the extruders on the WB - you market them for makers and tinkerers and then hobble them with PEEK.

It almost seems like in product design meetings there is a big checklist of things that need to be improved from previous models and after they ticked of 30% of things they just decide to call it a day.

Its not like it requires a massive amount of R&D costs to solve my points , the SD mod community has done it all for them.

I am pretty sure this has been done for you already, Lawsy's MK-5 will work and if it needs to be tweaked let me know and I'd be happy to do it.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

The one thing we don't know is if the models shown at Makerfaire is the final/gold master version. These are maybe early prototypes.

As n2ri pointed out the WBA has a different extruder setup then what was shown at the event.

I just searched Thingiverse (I haven't looked very hard) and saw some things labeled mk5 but I doubt any of them were specifically what you were referring to.  Regardless, it wouldn't be dual extruder compatible would it?

Given the complete lack of pictures or further information from SD, you may be right.  That said, at 7 weeks out from announcement, if they don't have final designs in-hand, we aren't making that 8 week window...

Depends on the spacing since those mount directly to the motor and only occupy the footprint of the face of the motor I would think you could run them side by side.  Either way it's a great starting point and I am no stranger to modifying Lawsy's designs to fit all versions of the E3d so why not for dual Picos?

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Hi,

As I am new to the 3d printing world, can someone please explain something to me,

Everyone here is saying that there are no fans on the extruder, however most of the pictures clearly show two (I'm guessing 60mm) fans right there on the extruder.  what are the fans that everyone is looking for?

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Of the bunch, It seems like the Press extruder was the only one that maybe 'final'. It had a cast aluminum/steel enclosure for the filament guide (possibly ninjaflex friendly?) with a SD branded translucent shroud. The other two (WB/WBA) look like SD4 extruders side by side (with the left side reversed). So wardjr statement sounds feasible.

Those two fans act as coolers for the steppers. The fan that people are wanting are gcode controlled fans that point down at the hotend to cool the filament as it exits.
