Topic: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Hey guys!

Guess it's time to make an official thread. We are releasing three new Solidoodle printers.

#1: The Solidoodle Press:

The Solidoodle Press is a consumer oriented printer. It features a slick injected molded exterior. It will feature our new SoliTouch technology. You will recognize this technology - it is a essentially a consumer version of the "Autolevelling" technology many of users like to use. It will sell on our website for $349.  If you want a slick 3D printer to impress the family, this is it.

#2 Solidoodle WorkBench:

The Solidoodle WorkBench is a printer for the maker crowd. It is our largest printer yet at  12" x 12" x 12. It has dual extruders, and sells at $1,299. It's really a great deal for such a large printer with dual extruders. It also has our Solitouch technology.

#3 Solidoodle WorkBench Apprentice: Basically a scaled down version of the apprentice. At $799, it Solitouch, and a 6x6x8 Build area.

We are also offering SoliCare - a 1 year protection plan for your printers. Our store has details on this, but we are very proud to be unveiling this since lots of people have been asking for a care plan. Solidoodle has also formalized and published its basic warranty http://www.solidoodle.com/warranty.

I will be here to answer any questions.

$349 (introductory, but still) for an 8x8x8 printer? Dang.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Will the Solidoodle press use the same filament cartridges as the rest of the lineup?

You guys have any better pictures of the press? A black blob leaves a lot to the imagination.

The new line up sounds amazing guys! Keep up the good work!

We will be posting more pictures as we get closer to shipping them. Consider this an early teaser.

Does it use the same basic mechanical layout like a SD3?

The press is significantly different. The WorkBench models will feel very similar.

Ok, that's it.  You all need to order the Press so that $349 price tag goes away and I wont be tempted anymore by it.  This is killing me!!!!

I ordered one. It's hard to beat for $349

Filament cartridges?  Please don't tell me that you have gone to closed source/ locked/ proprietary only filament cartridges.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Picked up a Press, order 26075. $42 shipping to Georgia.

This should be interesting. Looks like the Solidoodle 2 and 3 are no longer offered, explains why they started using SD3 cages and blowing out inventory with low prices.

mdr, they say they can use regular spools too.

Looks like the Press is already up to $399 now.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Already hit the $399 price tier.  I wonder what board it is running?  If it also had SD card support, it would be a sure buy for me.  Its tempting to get in while it is "cheap" but I'm skeptical of the claim "no manual calibration required to get started".  Just because you don't have to manually level the bed does not mean that you don't have to manually calibrate flow rates, extruder steps per mm, filament width, etc,  for each new spool of filament, and this will confuse a lot of new users.  Sure, their other printers could also technically print out of the box too but this sounds like there is about to be a "but..."

I'm torn on taking a chance and whipping out the card to buy it now vs. paying more in a few months to see if some of their quality issues have been worked out.  For example, I'm not interested in rebuilding the entire X carriage again if it starts binding again or replacing rods if Y starts skipping again.  I don't want to tear the whole thing down and add a pillow block just to get good circles.  Eliminating the acrylic extruder was a good start, but I just really hope they sourced some better quality materials for these next generation machines.  It took a long time to get my SD2 running smooth.  If they are advertising a "ready for consumer" 3D printer, I really hope that is what they deliver.

Very interested in this one. Can you (high-level) outline design updates since the SD2/SD3 days, besides the auto-leveling calibration and the glass bed?

Mostly interested in things like:

  • XY build position still belt-driven?  Still a lot of tension fiddling to be expected for circularity?

  • z-axis shaft 'wobble' features reduced, and if so how?

  • extruder changes from the original acrylic jigsaw?

  • hot-end changes / improvements?

  • electronics cooled or heatsinked at all? internal or external to casing (I have original SD2 w/ rear-mounted electronics only protected by acrylic cover w/ voltage probe and trimmer ports, but otherwise uncooled)

I'm not as worried about the filament path with an open-case unit, since I suspect (especially with dual extruders) I'd finally build a revolving/sliding spool 'bank' behind the unit for quick swaps...but the one (tiny) picture I can see of the Workbench almost looks like it has some sort of wire 'gridding' above the shafts...hope that wouldn't prevent top-down filament routing since I think that puts the least tension on the moving extruder head(s).

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

The Press has an injection molded ABS frame, and proprietary firmware/software.

"By makers, for makers". Right.

Solijohn, what microprocessor drives the Press?

proprietary firmware/software.

Is it really? Because the behavior of the auto leveling is very similar to what is implemented in Marlin (including the direction of the zig-zag pattern). Any official comment on this?

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

John says they are using new electronics for the press.  Hopefully they took the opportunity to add 8825 drivers and kill the moire surface.

Re: Introducing Three New Solidoodle Models

Well to be fair I saw software and assumed software/firmware as there was no mention of firmware.
