Topic: Extrusion Issues

I'm having a few issues with the Solidoodle 3. I'm printing with white PLA at 160C (I used to be able to go as low as 150)

Mainly, when I try to extrude, the extrusion gear turns, but does not feed the filament into the nozzle. If I push the filament manually, it'll come out just fine. I guess I should also note that the bearing next to the extrusion gear is not turning, even when the filament will extrude.

It seems to be somewhat random when the machine stops extruding, It's not a specific area of the bed so I think the bed is level, also it usually isn't in the first 3 layers when the bed is close the the nozzle (printing at 0.3mm layer heights).

I've tried using a guitar string to unclog the nozzle. I can push it all the way through to the filament loading section, wiggle it around, etc. The nozzle doesn't seem to be clogged, but I'm still unable to reliably extrude.

EDIT: I remembered just before the problem started, small black specs were appearing in my prints. Maybe that means something.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Extrusion Issues

After taking apart the extruder and nozzle and stuff, there was a little gunk that needed to be cleaned out (I guess something burned in there). So maybe it was a blocked nozzle after all.

Also, the acrylic housing was horribly broken in about 10 different places, so I've glued the various parts together and I'm waiting for them to set before reassembling.

I'll post back the results when I've reassembled the extruder and done a test print.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Print a Mk3 or Mk4 extruder mount when you get it back together... you may end up needing it.

Re: Extrusion Issues

The first thing you should print is a replacement assembly, the MK4 is popular.

Just printed one as a backup.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Ah great, thanks. I'll give it a go when I'm back up and running!

Re: Extrusion Issues

The acrylic is broken beyond repair and I cannot put the extruder back together. I've only had the machine a month so I'm hoping they won't charge for some new pieces.

Where are you located,  I have a spare set of the acrylic or I can print you an MK4 and send it to you

Re: Extrusion Issues

Hey,

I'm in the UK, so it's probably not feasible to send anything (I'm guessing you're in the States?).

Thanks for the offer though, really appreciate it.

Re: Extrusion Issues

I'm gonna call the shop I got it from in London (iMakr) and see if they'll sort me out with a new acrylic housing so I can then print out the MK4.

Thanks again, Rob.

Tom.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Got some new acrylic parts under warranty smile

My problem now seems to be that part of the peek barrel is protruding from the rest of the barrel, preventing insertion into the acrylic housing (I've attached a picture)

Is this something I can just hammer back in, or is there a more elegant solution?

Re: Extrusion Issues

You should be fine trimming it with a knife.  However you should send that pic to support.  If that is sticking up above the barrel, there may be a gap at the bottom of it which could lead to jamming.  There can't be any space between the interior channel of the PEEK and the top face of the brass barrel.  If there is a gap, the filament can expand into it as it softens or melts causing a jam.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Thanks for the reply, Ian. I've sent the image and I'll give trimming a go!

Filing with a knife worked wonderfully, thanks!

I just looked at my spare versus my original and noticed that my spare definitely sticks up higher than the original.

Re: Extrusion Issues

In my experience this happens when the barrel is too far threaded into the PEEK.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Gonna try my first print (Lawsy's MK4) with it all back together and will post back anything interesting.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Note that I had some similar issues in this thread :  http://www.soliforum.com/topic/2801/hav … n-problem/

I *think* my problem was either my spring was not pushing hard enough against the filament to properly grip it or my temperature was too low and not melting the PLA fast enough.

Also, I cleaned the threaded round "gripper" with a toothbrush.  There was a bunch of PLA chips in it creating a smooth surface.

Re: Extrusion Issues

Seems to be printing nicely.

I think my original issue was clogging and I think it was caused by having the bed too close to the extruder for a number of prints. Must have just gunked it up.
