Topic: Help with curling edges PLA

I just got my duct fan hooked up using this duct:

http://www.soliforum.com/topic/182/nozzle-fan-duct/

Hooked it up because i was having a lot of trouble with curling edges on small corners and overhangs, but it dosent seem to help that much...i set up a box fan on low about 6ft away from it and that seems to help too. Anything without an overhang comes out nice.

this is what im currently trying to print:

Ive oriented the balls so that a flat side is on the bottom to help. No support.
Most of my problems are happening on the first 20 layers or so, after that the print looks great.

Im wondering what i can do to make the bottom layers look better.

here are my settings.

I can't view the pics at work, but I've had this problem with emmett's gears from thingiverse. Try raising the perimeters and infill if they are low.

Re: Help with curling edges PLA

This doesn't look like "curling" to me, in the sense of the print pulling up off the plate. It looks more like difficulty printing the overhang.

Overhangs are notoriously hard to print. Yes, the fan will help, but they still may be a problem. Try these:

1.  Increase the number of outside perimeters (you have 3 maybe try 4 or 5). This will give a broader base for the next level to stick to.

2. Go slower at lower temperature (there are some scenarios where going faster actually helps instead, ie. bridging).

3.  Use support material

Ultimately, at the end of the day you are trying to extruder hot, liquid plastic into thin air, and that can be hard to do.

Re: Help with curling edges PLA

I print my PLA items with absolutely NO bed heating.  I originally heated the bed to about 60, but experienced curling too.

Thanks for the advice! Maybe curling was the wrong term but i think you get the idea. these would have turned out worse if i didnt go in after each layer and push it down with a spatula to level it out again for the next layer.

also i tried it with support but my support fused with the bottom and i dont see any way to change how close the support is to the part in Repeteir Host.

If you're using Slic3r within RH then there is an option in the Slic3r>Print Settings>Support Material that will change that,  mine is called "Contact Z Distance" and I'm running Slic3r 1.2.9

No worries! I had the same issue with infill percents, kept wondering how people would print infill that wasn't divisible by 5... tongue
