Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

XyzBoBz,

Thanks for your order. This will go out today. I'm going to upgrade it to express shipping so I can get it to you before Christmas. Well at least try (Auspost can be a bit slow this time of year)

Thanks again.

Cheers
Jamie

You are welcome, hopefully you get it Monday!

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

While not strictly filament, I have just received my new batch of kapton tape. 140mm x 33m. I managed to get a thicker version at .08mm, or just over 3mil. I've also been able to reduce the price to $29 a roll, thanks to a bulk discount.

International shipping should be around $10-15 to pretty much anywhere.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Jamie, on your site it says print temperature of the ABS is 210 - 250. I've heard tell that running the Solidoodle hot end above 200 can cause problems. What temperatures have worked for you for this filament? smile

Or any of you other guys who have bought ABS from 3dprintergear... what have you found to be good hotend and bed temperatures with this filament?

131

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I always run my bed at 110 since it only can get there enclosed and with a big print. The filament prints well at 200 on mine. The opaque filament can go up to 205 and if it is the translucent I try to keep it at 190-195.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

With most RepRap style printers, the nozzle and heater are a single metal part, and the thermistor is inside a hole drilled into it.  The Solidoodle hotend has a heater butted against the top of the nozzle, and the thermistor is taped to the side of the nozzle.  As a result, what is 230 for most printers is 195-200 for a Solidoodle.

On my printer ( UP ) I usually print at about 240. But as Ian pointed out, it can be difficult to know, and compare actual extrusion temperatures. Its probably best to try and see.

If 200 on the SD is actually around 230 then that should be fine.

Jamie

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Santa has just dropped off a whopping great box of 1.75mm Laywoo-D3 filament. Just in time for the holidays....

The more I print with this stuff the more I like it. I haven't had one blockage since going to a .5mm nozzle. It prints like soft PLA and is easy to get to stick to the plate. Also layers are almost non existent, even at .2mm.

I love the look and feel too, it has an organic tactile feel that is much more interesting than ABS or PLA in my opinion. It is slightly bendable, and almost impossible to break too!

So all you had to do was replace the nozzle head with a .5 mm nozzle?  That would be easy enough to swap in and out. Your prints look great with it. You should open up a hub in the states so we don't have to keep the international aus post in business. But, count me in anyways. This is what I've been waiting for.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi jooshs,

Yes the UP had a .4mm nozzle as standard. I didn't think .1mm would make much difference, but it seems to have. Either that or I just got unlucky the first two times I used laywoo-d3.

Funny enough using the .5mm tip hasn't hurt the print quality in ABS. I just printed out one of the nicest prints yet on the UP. So I might just stick with the .5.

Would love to expand overseas, but one step at a time.....

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Just a quick note, I've been printing with 3Dprintergear filament for a while now, had no issues with it what so ever. I'd highly recommend their filament for anyone who is looking for some.

Thanks for the words of support!  Glad its all printing nicely.

For those interested in how the laywoo-D3 prints with support.

I designed a spool for the laywoo-d3 filaments. STLs http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:39564

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I now also have a good supply of 1.75mm Taulman 618 nylon in stock.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

For the adventurous type, I now have 1.75mm PVA in stock.

Just did a test print and it worked great at ~200C on the UP.

Oh, also have .4mm nozzles in stock, and can drill to .5 if you desire. Good for printing the laywoo-d3 wood filament.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hey Jamie, have you tried switching between PVA and ABS to see if they will stick together?  It seems we have several Bowdens going here and are close to a dual extruder mod. It would be perfect for soluble support.

And by the way, here is the first astro photo2mesh set.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi jooshs,

I think it will stick fine to ABS, but I will give it a try later today or tonight.

Love the astro pics. Are you taking these photos ?  how are you getting the colours ?

I posted about it here...
http://www.soliforum.com/topic/800/phot … portraits/
Basically I switched filaments starting with clear, and then one crystalline and another, and black on top. I used the invert option so the brightest colors were on the bottom. They are pictures I took using an EQ platform I made with the Solidoodle for tracking. This is why I am waiting for the sphere!  I have much better pictures of Jupiter I would love to develop.

Took quite a few attempts at slicing to determine when to change filaments, how tall to do the different meshes, smoothing etc... But also got me more familiar with the program.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Awsome work. They turned out really well. I'm quite keen on astronomy myself, but at this stage that only extends to listening to podcasts ( also a great Carl Sagan fan).

I'm currently beta testing the new version that has spheres.....and something else that is pretty cool too. Sorry can't say anything more for now.

Any chance to try the PVA and sticking it to ABS?

Sorry, I'll get to it soon. Just have some repairs to do first.  8-(  Hopefully later today.
