Shipping plastic internationally is an expensive process, but in the same breath we Australians are very limited by who stocks plastic in the country.

Please post them as you find them.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Thanks for the list, very helpful, especially to save costs on shipping filament overseas from american or asian suppliers.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Not exactly a hot topic :-)

Ive just ordered filament from bilbycnc.com.au

guys name is lee and seems pretty good so far.
There prices are better than any ive seen in australia.

There ebay store sells 1kg rolls of primary colors for $40 with free postage.
They only sell certain colors on ebay though...maybe when theyre overstocked or something.

Ordering direct from the site isnt bad though, only charges $10 delivery

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi Dale,

Thanks for the order. Might be able to work something extra out for you, as you didn't get the 5% off the first time. Contact me when you are ready to order.

Incidentally, would there be any interest in a clear ABS ?

Cheers
Jamie

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Haha, sweet. Definately interested in the clear abs. I'll be in touch this week.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I always wondered why no one ever offers clear abs, or translucent colors.  Is there something about it that makes it difficult to make as filament?

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Yes I think its quite difficult to produce clear ABS. I know its available in PLA, but I personally would prefer to use ABS.

I have some samples coming, so fingers crossed the quality will be ok.

Not sure where you guys get kapton tape from, but I have just had some specially made at 140mm. It was for the UP printer, but it might be suitable for the solidoodle too. I got tired of using multiple strips.

Cheers
Jamie

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

One thing that interests me about clear ABS is finishing with acetone.  That glossy surface should translate to added clarity for clear filament.  Layers of perimeters and fill make models come out translucent rather than clear, but I would be interested in seeing the effect on a single walled cup or vase.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Yes could make for some interesting results!

I've also inquired about getting it tinted blue, green and red. Not sure if that is possible yet though.

Jamie

We've experimented a lot with clear PLA. The clear stuff is never 100% clear, even when it's a bit melty with acetone. Think clear legos. There is always a sort of "cloudy" texture.

Former Solidoodle employee, no longer associated with the company.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

The sample of clear ABS arrived today. So far I am very impressed with the quality. My first thought was great, they sent me fishing line !! :-)

I did a quick print of a torndo type design I whipped up. Wall thickness was 0.8mm.

Well I had a few pictures but apparently I can't post them. Any ideas?

EDIT: OK I have posted some pics on my blog if interested.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

That looks really good, I wonder why no one is selling it?  Can you give it a quick dip or brush in acetone and see how that affect the transparency?  Also print at a few different temperatures and see how it looks.  I've heard that it turns yellowish if you get it too hot.

17

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Thats pretty impressive, looks better than transparent pla to me.

18

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I second that... I haven't seen clear pla look that good.  I haven't found anyone in the US selling it either.

If you find a US seller, let us know, that stuff looks cool.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I will.  Maybe we can get a bulk shipment from 3dprintergear and let it split up in the US.

21

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

OK I've posted a few more picture on my blog, showing samples printed at different temperatures.

I also sanded and wiped with acetone to improve the transparency, but it had little to no effect. Printing at slightly lower temps might improve things a more, but I haven't tried it yet.

For those interested in price this filament will be a little dearer than normal. Probably in the range of $10.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi Dale,

no probs. They should be here in around 2 weeks. I also have 2 new colours. One is a perfect milk chocolate colour, the other I'll be calling Deathstar grey!

I'll also have samples of the tinted filaments on their way soon. I think this will be a first in ABS!
