Topic: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

So I need some help here guys. After upgrading to the e3d hot end, my printer bed has not been able to move. It heats up perfectly fine, as does the extruder. I uninstalled and reinstalled RH. Nothing. Unplugged the wires and put them back in. Nothing. Switched the xyz cables to see if they were bad. Nothing. I am pretty new to 3d printing and electronics, but through the guides I have found online, I was able to install the e3d fine and get the arduino settings working.

If I am missing something or if you guys have any other ideas to try, I would be greatly thankful. At this point, I'm even looking at any possible services where I can send The printer to have it looked at.

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Could you post a picture of your motherboard? If you put the 4-pin Z motor connector on another axis like X, the bed does not move? Keep in mind that there are 2 plugs for each axis. The first is the endstop which has 2 plugs, and the motor which has 4. Post a picture of your motherboard so we know what type you have.

Congrats on the e3d. Once you're up and running you'll wish you had never used the stock hotend smile

Edit: also abandon the idea of sending in the printer somewhere. You'll get it going. There really aren't that many pieces.

I'm On my way To work now. I will post a pic during my lunch. Thanks for the fast reply.

Are you getting any error messages in the log screen at the bottom of RH? i.e. Maxtemp or Thermal Runaway?

No errors. But when I try to move the bed, the commands start queuing up and the software starts crashing.
photos of my printer and motherboard are attached.

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

So is it only the Z (bed) that won't move?...Do the X and Y jog commands work?

EDIT:  Also, never switch stepper plugs unless the printer is completely powered down and USB cable unplugged  Otherwise you can fry the stepper drivers.

I made sure it was off. It doesnt move along z.  How do I jog x and y? I dont know that term. Sorry for the ignorance lol

In RH on the Manual Control tab...Click on the X and Y arrows.

EDIT: BTW, am I to assume that prior to you upgrading to the E3D, that the printer was running?

Yeah it was running fine.

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Great!

So can you move the carriage along X & Y using the arrows on the Manual Control tab in Repetier Host?

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Sorry for the segmented posts here, but I'm still at the office and the day has been a bit scattered (my mind follows suit).

So your printer was running fine until you upgraded to the E3D...this would indicate that something changed due to the install...

You mentioned that the hot end was heating fine; but will it come up to your heat setting (say 220c) and stay there?

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Just tested it. The heater stays at 220C fine. The extruder moves around xy normally and the filament wheels turn fine as well.I am also noticing that when I command the extruder to go a certain distance that surpasses the edge, it sounds like its crashing and hitting against the black piece with the stopper rather than just not moving to the set amount. This may be to the e3d extruder piece being a bit bigger, but I am not sure.

Post some pics please...want to see your setup with the E3D and these stops your crashing into.

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Have you upgraded your power supply? The e3d could be using too much power so that there is no more juice left for the z stepper. Try moving the z axis without heating the hot end. If it works then you probably need to upgrade your power supply.

I don't think this is a likely culprit. I've seen numerous accounts of the e3d working just fine under the stock psu. It does push it to its limits, though.

It sounds to me like you may have an endstop problem based on your description of the axes crashing into various parts. But pictures will be needed to know more about what might be going on there. The most useful thing you could post is a video if possible.

What happens if you start a print in dry mode? Push the endstop for Z by hand so that it thinks the printer homed the bed correctly. Does it behave normally?

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

One more thought. If you go to manual controls, and type "M119" into the textbox and hit send, the Repetier Host console will show you whether endstops are reading as activated/deactivated. The output will look something like this (I'm approximating):

Z_MAX: open
Z_MIN: triggered
X_MAX: triggered
X_MIN: open
Y_MAX: triggered
Y_MIN: open

You can ignore X_MIN, Y_MIN and Z_MAX, unless they say anything other than "open," but this shouldn't happen on the stock motherboard. Stock Solidoodles only have switches for X_MAX, Y_MAX and Z_MIN.

The output above is what you will see if X, Y, and Z are homed. if none of the axes are homed (pushing their endstop button), everything will read open. Check this as well. I don't think this is causing your bed issue, but if your printer is bumping into stuff this is worth checking.

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

I checked out the M119 command prompt and got -

12:38:17.015 : Reporting endstop status
12:38:17.015 : x_max: open
12:38:17.015 : y_max: open
12:38:17.015 : z_min: open

I saw that my mini fan that comes with the E3d was not connected, i went ahead and got that back and soldered it. Now when I try to move anything I get "Printer stopped due to errors. Fix the errors and use M999 to restart. ( Temperature is reset. Set it after restarting.)" and nothing moves.

Both the bed and extruder still heat up fine. This is probably a new power supply issue. I already own this one that I bought off of Amazon, but I do not know how to install it.
http://www.amazon.com/SUPERNIGHT-Switch … wer+supply

Is there a guide with photos or videos that can show me how to do this? Or someone explain it to me? Also what else do I need to buy to get this going? I already have solder, the soldering tool, and wire strippers.

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Sounds like your thermistor is not connected properly to me. Make sure the thermistor legs are not making contact with the heater block or you will get inaccurate readings that could not only cause overheating, but M999 errors as well.

Okay I got the printer moving again. Thanks for a suggestion Jago. That solved it. Here is a video I uploaded with what is going on with the extruder crashing into the sides.

Still no luck with the bed hmm

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

That's normal. There is no endstop on the left.  Edit: although as mentioned below it means your dimensions are wrong \/

Put the Z motor on the X or Y stepper driver with the printer off. Turn back on and command X and Y. If it doesn't move, you've got a wiring issue or the motor is donezo. If it does move you may have a burned up stepper driver sad

If you have a Sang board a burned up stepper is cheap to fix. If you have a Printrboard you'll need a new board, unless someone knows better than me.

If you're crashing into the front and left sides you need to decrease your print area in print settings.
When you have the Z motor off can you turn the screw by hand?  When you call for movement can you help it in the appropriate direction and feel if the motor is trying to move?

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

I can turn it by hand to hit the Z stopper, but I do not hear the motor moving or even trying to go. For the printer settings i have the printer area width at 200, depth at 200 and height at 100. x and y max and 200, every other setting set at 0 for the printer shape tab.

EDIT: sending the extruder to home causes to crash for about 3 seconds making the same noise as in the video. Does not sound good hmm

Re: Solidoodle 3 bed heats up, but doesn't move.

Reduce it to 190 for xy and increase z to 190 also.  Then see if it will crash from home and if your z will move.  Only try moving these after you put them all HOME (touching the end switches) by hand.
