Topic: Hotend Clogged

Well it finally happened. Had my printer since May and it finally clogged. I can't get it to extrude, I've tried everything from needles to thin magnet wire in the nozzle to no avail. Left it extruding for long periods of time while I poke around, nothing.

I'm printing nylon 618 so Acetone will do nothing.

I have disassembled the Solidoodle extruder bracket before and it SUCKS BIG TIME. I DO NOT want to have to do it again if it is at all avoidable. Is there a way to remove the nozzle from the hotend without removing the hotend? Thanks

Also, does anyone know the shipping time on a new solidoodle hotend? hmm

Re: Hotend Clogged

Since your printing 618 anyways I would suggest getting a E3D hotend from Tim... it is not a direct replacement but is fairly straightforward to make it fit along with the other mods it needs. The benefits of serviceability alone make it worth doing the upgrade smile

as for ship times.... well knowing SD it could take a while...2-3 weeks... just a guess but probably close.

Re: Hotend Clogged

yea, SD used First class package service not Priority Mail for my current order. I paid 10.00 shipping, thats plenty to cover PM.Now tracking shows it stuck in NY after 5 days.(yea I know usps tracking is flakey sometimes)but I got a package from FLA in 3 days.IMHO using a cheaper way to ship when I paid for faster way is just not right.

SD3, E3D hotend, linear bearing on x/y axis',pillow block bearing on y conneting rod, ball bearngs on front y axis, fan on y stepper motor.

Re: Hotend Clogged

E3D has a wait time too. And the real problem is that I don't have any working replacement extruder brackets (I printed some earlier but I don't think they fit)

Incorrect, zero wait time. I'm staring at 200 hot ends right now.

In that case... But I wouldn't be able to mount it with the standard SD bracket sad

2n2r5 used to do it, you could try PMing him.

Re: Hotend Clogged

I agree that an E3D is a fine solution but since you're "dead in the water" anyway, you can unscrewing the current nozzle and barrel from the peek.

Just heat up the hot end, then shut it off and while it's hot, untape the thermistor and unplug the wires and try to unscrew the nozzle (preferably with some heat resistant gloves).  You might need to use a small tool to hold the peek in place while you turn.  My guess is that the barrel will unscrew from the peek and you can see if there is a plug between the peek and barrel.

You can remove the hot end completely without disassembling the acrylic holder.  I have done it many times with no issues...

Re: Hotend Clogged

I think I'm going to pick up an E3D, what is the difference between Bowden and Direct? Thanks.

Re: Hotend Clogged

Solidoodles use direct, with the extruder mounted over the hot end. Bowden uses a couple feet of PTFE in between. The stepper motor stays fixed, only the hot end moves around.

Direct extruders are simpler, bowdens are (potentially) faster due to less mass on the moving parts. Some people have converted their Solidoodles to bowdens:
