Solidoodles use direct, with the extruder mounted over the hot end. Bowden uses a couple feet of PTFE in between. The stepper motor stays fixed, only the hot end moves around.

Direct extruders are simpler, bowdens are (potentially) faster due to less mass on the moving parts. Some people have converted their Solidoodles to bowdens:

Proteus wrote:

Well it finally happened. Had my printer since May and it finally clogged. I DO NOT want to have to do it again if it is at all avoidable. Is there a way to remove the nozzle from the hotend without removing the hotend?

I agree that an E3D is a fine solution but since you're "dead in the water" anyway, you can unscrewing the current nozzle and barrel from the peek.

Just heat up the hot end, then shut it off and while it's hot, untape the thermistor and unplug the wires and try to unscrew the nozzle (preferably with some heat resistant gloves). You might need to use a small tool to hold the peek in place while you turn. My guess is that the barrel will unscrew from the peek and you can see if there is a plug between the peek and barrel.
