Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Well 14 weeks is a bummer. Hope it arrives soon so you can start chewing into your filaments!

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Just saw a sneak peek of the new transparent colours!  They look very cool. I'll have samples next week, with product the week after I suspect. (If I'm happy with the samples of course)

So the colours at this stage will be Ruby (red), Amber (yellow) and of course Sapphire (blue)! Sorry no green just yet.

As always I'll post more details on my blog.

Oh and if you like wood working, watch this space....

Cheers
Jamie

The Crysta-Line range is looking great!
Definately interested in that wood filament, crazy stuff!

I'd be worried about it clogging the Solidoodle.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi Jamie,
any feedback yet on the crysta-line stuff ?
i am thinking i may need a couple of spools of that quite soon. I assume a 7 segment display hard up against a thinnish layer of this would be quite readable.

what did you mean by stronger ? is it less bendy, more brittle, harder to dent ?

I agree!  I'll report my findings when I get the samples. Although I'll test on and UP machine, it should still be indicative.

I have the samples of the colours now. Just done some prints and have put them up on the blog. Also made them available for preorder. Stock should be only 7-10 days away.

My printer won't print single layers, so all the examples I show are at least 2 layers thick. If you can print at 220C and single layer it should turn out quite transparent.

The strength is only subjective at this point. I haven't done a proper A/B comparison. But I did have a failed print that I tried to break and couldn't. This is at 270C mind you. I'll try and do some tests when I get time.

Cheers
Jamie

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Jamie (aka 3Dprintergear).  You did a post on your blog regarding lithophanes using the software Photo to Mesh.  Can you possibly post your settings and how you export that to the printer so I don't have to go through the same learning curve.  I was able to get a couple STL files out but they have errors when I try to view them.

I'd really appreciate it.  Ian replied to another thread I had asking about this very process.  You also mention there are other softwares out there that do the same thing, could you give me the names if you remember them?

Thanks!  They look great by the way.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi cmetzel,

The trickiest thing I find with P2M is that you must set the base height (thickness) just right. If its too thin the print will fail, if its too thick the detail will be lost.

Steps

1. Import picture.
2. Move "points along x dimension" and "y dimension" to around 240. Leave mesh x size at 100.
3. Adjust smoothness etc to get enough detail, but not more than the printer will resolve. Also use mesh height adjustment. I find 2-5 works best, depending on the contrast.
4. Make sure "invert mesh" is selected.
5. Change to "closed triangular mesh".
6. Now adjust base height. I usually start out at around .8mm, but there is no hard rule here. Each photo will be different, and sometimes it takes a few goes to get right.
7. Now export as STL.

You will want to print this standing upright, not laying flat. This can also be tricky on the last top layers as the vibrations from the printer can cause the print to fall over. Print on finest layer height too.

Tips.
Try not to have too much detail up the top of the picture, as this makes it top heavy and more likely to fall over.
Pictures with little background detail work best, eg blue sky. I have also used photoshop to cut out the person in the photo, then replace the background with a flat light grey. This works quite well, but is a bit more work.

Hope this helps.

Testing with the wood yesterday things started out looking good, but sure enough the tip clogged up. Although it was in the pre chamber, not the actual nozzle, which is odd.

My printer has a .35mm nozzle, and the makers told me to use .5mm, so I will drill out a spare I have and try again.

The small wood part looks cool. Very flexible when thin and there is quite a bit of droop, so probably needs lots of air. Funny thing is it smells like cut wood when extruding, and due to the texture the layers are virtually invisible! Worth persisting I think.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Crysta-Line colour update.

Just been told that it will be a little longer for the filament. I'm working on it getting to me on or around the 12th of November.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

It will give you time to drill out the nozzle.  For Solidoodle users, it is easy.  You can order a .5mm nozzle from Makergear and just switch them out.

BTW I got the clear samples, I'll try to print them today or tomorrow.  The red definitely leans heavily to the pink side.  That's fine for me, there are some girls here who would like some pink prints.

64

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Could you post a link to we're we could purchase the makergear nozzle please Ian?

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Isn´t the solidoodle .35, so you should order a .35 nozzle smile

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Hi Ian, glad they arrived. I'll be interested to see how the clear compares.

Not sure what can be done to the red to make it less pink. My thoughts are that it is just what happens when you "water down" the colour red. Maybe if I had a clear pink it would make the red seem more red! 8-)

68

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

The Solidoodle's hot end is actually from Makergear.  So if you want a .5mm nozzle to use with the wood filament, you can order one from Makergear and it will fit.

69

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I just ordered a .5 and a spare .35...on there own. Do the nozzles just screw in and out? Or should I have actually ordered an entire "hot end" with a .5 nozzle?

70

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

The nozzle screws off.  You may end up having to unscrew the brass barrel from the black insulator, just because those threads will let go before the nozzle lets go of the barrel.

Having an extra .35 nozzle or two isn't a bad idea.  If you have a bad clog you can't deal with by poking wire into the opening, you can swap them out and keep the printer running while you deal with the clogged one.

71

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Oh ok, so in that instance I would just separate the insulator and nozzle, screw the insulator back in and screw the new nozzle back into that?

I figured I'm paying $30 shipping anyway so an extra $10 for a spare .35 seemed like a good idea.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

Just posted a picture and a small write of the 1.7mm wood filament up on my blog, if anyone is interested.  http://3dprintergear.blogspot.com.au/

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

that looks good .. it would work well in other colours, especially black..
it sort of looks like mdf .. does it have the same texture printed ?

order placed for some crystaline stuff .. hope the reds not too far away, i have a job and hope to put it in front of a 7 segment display, will be interesting to see how it looks.
might break out the sandblaster.

Re: Australian Filament Suppliers

I just put up a blog post on the Crysta-Line filament.  I printed a bunch of samples of Clear and Ruby Red at .3mm and .1mm.  It should give you an idea of what to expect from color and clarity.
