Re: Orders Shipping List

It's far too late now, but it might have been better for them to go with a batch system like Makerbot did in the early days.  Announce the opening of a batch for sale, and when it is sold out, no more orders get taken.  When that batch begins to ship, open up the next batch for sale.  It makes the supply of components more predictable, and the batch sizes can get scaled up or down depending on production capacity.  It also insures that a batch is financed only by its own orders.  It would suck for customers though, because you would have to get lucky to even get to order a printer.

I think they didn't expect demand to be strong enough to require a system like that.  It may have seemed overly optimistic, based on sales of the Solidoodle 1.  I don't know how many they sold, but I suspect it was less than 50.  They didn't market it very hard, so that kept sales manageable.  I'm thinking they were planning on keeping the S2 low key at the start, but the price point was big enough news that it got away from them.

It really shouldn't have been such a surprise if they had been paying attention to what happened to Printrbot.  That one Kickstarter campaign hardly used up all of the demand available at that price point.

"In stock" is solely a technical thing so that the website's cart system will let you preorder your solidoodle.

I wasn't saying anything different. I was saying that the 8-10 week preorder is a lie, since it's way more than 10 weeks, and by "putting out of stock" I meant not allow people to order (which I realize is probably not financially possible).

You really got the point. But I thought about a printrbot. But the results of the doodle are way better (if the pictures are the truth).

lol, no .. its all fake, massive amounts of CGI done on the videos and photoshopped printed results.

seriously .. fake ??
theres plenty of youtube videos showing results from awesome to disastrous, so I guess you get out what experience, practice and work put into setting it up. the basic settings are probably adequate for most things but the more experienced are going to thinner layers and higher speeds etc.

The real answer to your question was "I don't know".  Since that usually isn't satisfactory, he needed to answer again with an estimate, which no matter what, will never be as accurate as the first answer.  So you can be mad that he doesn't (and can't) know, or you can be mad that his attempt to predict a highly variable future turned out to be wrong.

Nah,

I'm one of these people that would actually prefer the truth. (something that solidoodle clearly struggle with)

I'd have preferred the reply,
"you know what, we have no idea, we have no idea who will be working for us, how much we'll be making, and consequently we have no idea how long it's going to take items to get to you. -I know we've promised things time and time again. but you know what shit happens!"
-at least I could have laughed at that.

This is the crazy thing, (or the thing that drives me crazy).

they have no idea when they can ship machines. but just don't tell you that.
And I get that he was having to answer with estimates, but he completely ignored the question.

I asked when will machines ship that were ordered in July, he told me when May orders should finished shipping and when June orders will start! it took two more emails for them to provide an estimate. -despite the fact that they provided a shipping update at the end of august that was very far reaching. (though now completely wrong).

Seriously, if I were to contact support right now, and say I haven't ordered yet, just checking, if I ordered now how long would it take to get to me.
I get told yeah 8-10 weeks. it's in the order forms, repeated several times on the FAQ.

so as a new customer I'd order, then if a week later I contact support again and say are we still good on delivery times, All I'll get is shrugs and excuses.

why are they still saying that they expect orders made today to be shipped in 8-10 weeks.

Yes, that's clearly a lie. If they wanted to be honest they should put the printer out of stock, but as others have pointed out that might kill the company, which is not a good thing if you *ever* want to get your printer.

Anyway, does anyone remember the "revised shipping estimates" that they would "post shortly" (two weeks ago)?

They don't need to write out of stock.
they just need to be realistic about what they can do.

it's now almost exactly 12 weeks until Christmas.

SO 8-10 weeks assembly, plus 2 weeks shipping, (those are maximum values stated in the FAQ)

Ordering right now, I should be able to stick one under the tree as a gift to someone else?

Except we all know it's a lie.

more than anything that's what I hate.

As I said earlier, I'm not waiting for a toy, I see this as a tool that will help me to create things.
I had ideas about what I'll do with my solidoodle, and have already spent weeks designing things in CAD, waiting for my CAM to actually get here!

the ineptness of these guys.

they've already ruined Christmas business opportunities for me.
and it seems like anyone in the past few weeks that may have been stupid enough to believe what they write in their FAQ is going to have a disappointing Christmas also.

it's so frustrating.

As I said in my last message to support.
if something is pre-order then they shouldn't have charged for it.
the simple facts are.
I couldn't care if this was a con, my card provider will cover me.
but I'm running out of time for what they will cover me. and any ideas as to how solidoodle might help the consumer
-whether that's not charging up front, offering re-fund/rebuy options without loosing order places.
-offering factually correct information on their blog/facebook/FAQ/Google groups.

the just refuse to acknowledge.

At the moment, I might get a machine in mid November, hopefully, fingers crossed.

So what you're saying is that because it says preorder the 8-10 week lead time should be not be taken seriously? And any consumer that is purchasing this product should know to in most cases double that time estimate because the word preorder is on the product page?

Re: Orders Shipping List

.

Has anyone heard when June, and then July orders are supposed to start shipping?

Has anyone heard when the new software release will be out? It seems most of the work was done by people on the board in a few days, what is the delay?

Has anyone heard when the new firmware will be released? They are using a version developed by a customer awhile ago that us out and being used by a number of people, when is the official release?

Has anyone heard if they are going to start using better shipping boxes so we have a better chance of getting a working product?

It seems to be difficult to get information about product status and shipments. Is this normal for this industry?

Re: Orders Shipping List

Id assume june shipments will be starting to trickle out very soon based upon where they seemed to be with may shipments.

I thought they mentioned software/firmware updates are held up for a bigger reveal than the current updates provided. Regardless you might be better off with the upgraded firmware available from users here with updated codes and such

I don't know about upgrading boxing but they have upgraded the printer to withstand abuse. Hopefully this works.

Re: Orders Shipping List

You will note that historically, there were fewer employees and a huge number of initial orders.

They have hired more employees, and stated that past June/July or so there are fewer orders.
So they may believe that 8-10 weeks for newly placed orders could still be somewhat realistic.

People love to complain, so I'm thrilled that people are griping about the lead time instead of saying "this thing sucks, want money back".

Besides-  they're still refining the design and assembly team, so I'd prefer to wait until things stabilize.  Plus, I locked in my order before the price went up $100.

I like how Sam puts out an (approx) weekly update blog.
Seems like a good guy to me.

Re: Orders Shipping List

If you've read the forums youd know plenty of people have gotten their printers. If you even read the thread you posted in, you'd realize the same conclusion. This is a start up company still early enough in its life that the overwhelming response for their product essentially blind sided them and put them in a hole right off the bat. Patience is necessary.

189

Re: Orders Shipping List

I got a reply a few days ago stating that they should be hitting June orders by the end of this week. July orders will start in about a month. Gettin' excited here; placed my order in late July.

Re: Orders Shipping List

Grr I am the most impatient person i know lol. 7/23 order here. Sigh. Oh well. More time for them to work out extra bugs before i get mine.

I had to laugh. I ordered in May, and it didn't ship yet. If they don't blow out at least 200 printers at once, they will never EVER send me my printer this week. I'm sorry, but you could add 2-3 weeks to every date they give you. I hope so badly that it's worth the wait.

So taking what maryla wrote, (although not knowing what times orders were placed , i think mine was around midday) there was 31 orders placed  but only 11 actually completed and paid for

suspect it was about there ^^

Re: Orders Shipping List

I just had a conversation the other day via Chat with John (Solidoodle Support) and they were caught up... to May 17th. This is WELL behind where they were hoping to be from their Aug 24th blog post (May orders were supposed to be done with halfway through Sept), and makes me pretty annoyed (my own order was in late July), though I am going to keep my order in for now.

Now while I am disappointed, I am pleased to see design improvements being integrated in new builds (rather than waiting for a new model or somesuch), and hope that the quality will be high when I finally get my printer.

198

Re: Orders Shipping List

My order date was June 5th and I emailed John at Support about a status update on Thursday.  He replied within about an hour saying mine should be shipping within the next two weeks.

199

Re: Orders Shipping List

Based on the fact that the most active topic (by far) tries to answer the question "how many months til I get my printer". I've decided to buy a Prusa Kit which is also $500 from MakerFarm.com. Because I haven't gotten it yet I can't recommend this kit or the Prusa. But as it actually is "in stock" I'll get it in less than a week.

So the question is: Should I cancel my order or should I just get it when it ships and sell it? BTW, I ordered 8/5/12 so It'll likely be late November before I see the printer.

Re: Orders Shipping List

This is what I got when i emailed support.

James,
We're processing late May at the moment. It might be a month or so before we hit July. I hope this helps.
