The lid is too low to raise the stepper to line up with the Z-Probe. I plan on putting it in the filament 'bay'.

Did not want to just extend the probe down?  We basically have to manually actuate it anyways, moving it down wouldnt be too much issue I figure?

Where did you end up mounting the drive?

The Z-Probe is part of the Y assembly. Didn't want to have to redesign that. Trying to make this mod a drop-in replacement by recycling as much of the original parts as possible.

You have to manually activate yours? Intresting. Homing Z and running the Z-Offset auto lowers the probe for me.

sorry!  Read that wrong before! I will take a look at my probe and see if I can easily extend it.  I dont mind sacrificing some Z height to skip the bowden.  I figure that would be one more area of BS to go wrong? Going bowden though would allow it to move faster because of reduced mass, bit of a preference thing I guess?

Will you be able to open the lid with the Bowden installed?  Or have you not gotten there yet?

Extending the probe is not the issue. Area there you need to raise the stepper is the issue. I have a plan B model of that- But the inner lid where the filament goes would have to come out.

As for opening the lid with the bowden setup, I plan on leaving enough tubing to to still have the lid closed.

Forgive me for being naive, I know much more about professional machines... But if you just extend the zprobe down the machine just loses Z axis room, nothing else.  The stepper can stay where it is, in the same configuration and the E3D just hangs down, no? 

Also, let me know if you need something more rigid than ABS or PLA.  I can throw some parts in the 660 on my next print and shoot them to you at no cost. That is the full color sandstone stuff.  It is stupid strong unless it sustains a large shock. 1/4 inch thick 1x1 square takes roughly 60 lbs of force to break and does not flex.

If you don't care about Z-height. Then yeah that will work. My goal is to retain it. And to do so with minimal mods to the machine and to reuse components to get the mod done.

That's okay. I have a Shapeoko in-house and also have access to a Tormach (Friends machine shop). Once I get this ironed out I plan on making this out of aluminum.
