Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013HQ7B0/

There where I got mine. But its 21.99 last Thursday. I used one 1mm washer under each screw.

SD Press - v1 (Pre-order) / RAMPs /w DRV8825's / Cyclops (25w) / Dual Bowden / Mk8 Gear / MK2b PCB Heat bed /w custom replacement Z / PEI Bed
SD2 / E3D v6 / Direct Drive / Mk8 Gear / RAMBo v1.3 / PEI Bed / Anti Z backlash mod / Ikea Expedite enclosure.
Both Driven by Octoprint (devel) via a RPi B+ / Neopixel status alerts / GPIO Controlled SSR / (SD2) 450 Watt PSU for remote power-up/shutdown.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

oh nice! i didnt think of amazon, McMaster is in NJ and im in NY, one day shipping, so i usually get all i can from there.  12x24 sheet of the .005 stuff from them is $24.  Was the washer for spacing required? by that i mean like is the washer there so that the PEI doesnt rest directly on the heating element? I havent gotten my printer yet so i cant visualize whats going on there.  Reason i ask is if its not required, ill just go with the .010 stuff from Mcmaster and have damn near the exact overall height as you did using a 1mm washer and .06 thickness PEI.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

The washer went under the aluminum plate to raise it so the two 'guides' would slightly touch the PEI sheet. This is done so the sheet would not slide out without mild force. Otherwise it would slide around while the print was happening.

ok.  so then i should just go with what you have done and proven to work....versus attempting to order something different and hope it works, lol.  thanks again. much appreciated.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

How does the PEI compare to Kapton?

I'll print them off tomorrow and test fit everything.

MacGuyverX, looking good! Can you link to sources for the PEEK tubing, the (BSP?) PEEK tube fitting,  and your filament cooling fan and anything else I'm forgetting for Bowden?

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

Is PEI easily cuttable?

Also, from what I've read elsewhere, he's right, PEI > everything else

I was curious how much better it was.  I just bought a 36yd spool of 8" wide Kapton tape for $40 so I'm trying to guage how much buyer's remorse I should be feeling.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

Please forgive a complete 3D printing noob but what is the advantage of the PEI?  I'm having pretty good results with the stock glass platform.  The reviews for that PEI on Amazon say that it has great adhesion but you have to wait for it to cool completely then the print pops right off.  So does that mean you HAVE to wait for it to cool?  Right now I just pop my prints off the glass and maybe touch up the print surface with a purple glue stick and I'm ready to print again without cooling anything.  Or do you guys use multiple PEI sheets and swap them out?

Also (and again forgive the noobiness), I'm sure the Bowden style extruder works great or you all wouldn't be using it, but man that looks odd to me.  By pushing the filament so far don't you ever have kinking/bending issues?  Or is the inner diameter of the Teflon tubing exactly what it needs to be to guide the filament and there's no internal slop to allow it to buckle?

I've got an EE background so the electrical aspects of this hobby don't vex me, but I'm still coming up to speed on the mechanical/material nuances.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

Glass/gluestick works ok for PLA, but PEI works well with just about every plastic on the planet.

Bowden tubing is indeed just slightly larger than the filament. Bowden setups are very prevalent, some of the best printers (like Utilimaker) use them.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

Im interested in WHY it works.  Cant particularly argue with the results I have seen from you guys, but the curious scientist in me is wondering ha ha!

I was just going to rewind a different filament on the SD spool at some point.

The filament holder is easily removable, leaving just the thin upper lid, if that provides enough enclosure for you.   Without the spool holder being so close to the printhead, routing the cable bundle is much less of a problem.  I also didn't have overheating issues with just the upper lid in place

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

I am printing the main body for the Non-Bowden version. I have a race going between an SD2 (Max'd out - no E3D) vs. a Press (also Max'd out /w E3D) i'll post pictures of the outcome.

Pretty pleased with the outcome. Just ironing out some clearance issues.

All the STEP/STL/FW files should be up shortly after.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

So......Except for the additional parts you need to print, what needs to be purchased for the Bowden Setup and what would need to be purchased for the Non Bowden setup to get one up and running?

Many Thanks

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

Both : E3D v6 Universal /w Bowden Extras (Comes with a bowden tube) Then request either the 24V @ 25W or the 24V @ 40W Heater Cartridge.
http://www.filastruder.com/products/all … -v6-hotend

Bowden setup:
x2 M4 Screws @ 30mm - 2x M4 Nuts - 4x M3 Screws @ 30mm - x1 608ZZ bearing - x1 Spring (anything about 11mm in diameter) x2 Push-to-Connect Fitting (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PN5G2NQ/)

Non-Bowden Setup:
3x M3 Screws @ 30mm - 1x 608ZZ Bearing - 1x Spring (see above)
I use a short piece of PTFE tubing that have a "V" shape at the top .

See here:

http://mlabs.us/public/ZZ1F0DE5EE.jpg

But please wait before you purchase anything. I want to run both of these thru their paces before I release all this stuff.
If you're dead set on doing this mod. Minimal you'll need to get the hotend and the heater cart.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

I use a rubber band and zip tie to keep the cable up with the lid closed. SD support suggested the zip tie, and said they're working on an stl of a clip for people to print.

I've been able to print with the lid closed since I dropped to 220c for the extruder. Although, it's a bit chilly here right now, so that may help.

Re: E3Dv6 on Solidoodle Press

Any chance Filastruder would sell a complete kit for the Press?  I don't have an SD2 to print parts while my Press clogs on every print.

Wow! It moves quick! Were you able to change the acceleration settings in whatever software you are running it in? If not, how is that done?

Yes, I will once the files are posted.

Thanks, I will hang fire for now, although I may get the E3d-v6 while I'm still in the US as I will be leaving to go back home in April.  The rest of the stuff is easy enough to get in the UK.

Any drawbacks to the 40watt vs. the 25-watt?
