That makes more sense now.

So any ideas on colorant? Cause I really want some tie-die filament.

existing coloured filament pieces will make for a light colourant.

(in industrial blow moulding flash from previously moulded objects is recycled into the mix as a part of the colouring)

for tie die effect, (in the traditional washed out pastel colours, just produce a layer, throw some clippings of a strong red coloured filament in with some natural chips, then some more natural then some yellow, then some more natural, then some blue.

that should produce a washed out tie die effect of a natural / red / orange / yellow / green / blue filament.

you'll need to use plenty of natural chips to separate the colours (mixing all together too closely will just make brown/black, but clearly you need to use enough colour to actually taint the natural plastic.

liquid food colourants are likely to be messy

Thanks for the tips. I have some masterbatch showing up later this week. Hopefully I can produce something the looks pretty decent.

Nice! What's your source?

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

To get consistent coloring, I'd guess you want the auger further in, so it's churning more melt zone. Try not to let the auger tip get within 0.5" of the brass, though.

This is an exciting project.  I hope to join in the development as soon as I can.. SD3 comming in January.  Excellent work so far!

Nice! Looks consistent? What ratio did you mix in the colorant?

BTW, I usually set the printer back 5" from the table edge, so that the filament is supported in two places. I find this gives more consistent filament.

It is recommended to mix at a ratio of 100 to 1.  Being that I was doing a super small test batch I'd say it was mixed about 50 to 1 with natural ABS. I figured the actual filament color would be lighter than the masterbatch color but it ended up being the exact same (see picture). Ended up being very consistent.

Bad news: Looks like my thrust bearing is starting to destroy itself. Guess we need something stronger. Might have to put off extruding till it is replaced.

Did you ever lubricate the thrust bearing? It's rated at 550 lbs....

Yes, I'm thinking it got metal flakes in it when I took the kit apart the first time. Lesson learned.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

I actually switched back to the 30lb bearing, it's been fine for 24 hours straight once I oiled it.

I do have spare bearings. I can send some for free on the 27th - email me.

Can you take a picture of the bearing, and one of the whole extruder?

Edit: I found one at the same price that's rated to 2,000 lbs that we can switch to.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

DePartedPrinter,  where did you get the masterbatch in small amounts?  Was it from a friend, or is there a supplier that will send samples, or not require huge minimum orders?

Tim:

The new hot end just failed with a loose wire, so any hope of printing anything this week is gone.   Solidoodle posted a message saying that they will not be providing any support until next week.  Sorry, but there's nothing I can do at this point

^What he said

Couple of things to keep in mind.  They sell both ABS and HDPE colorants.  I am getting some interesting results mixing HDPE colorant and ABS plastic (not going to recomend doing this yet until I dial in temperatures and ratios). If you order from them I would stick with ABS and ABS colorant.  I have been talking with the guys at OSprinting and you can expect more ABS colors in the coming months.

No worries - thanks for the update. No rush either, I was just curious when I posted in the other thread.

Have any more pictures to share? Also, I never got an email about your thrust bearing - let me know if you need one!

I emailed you.

I will get some more pictures as soon as I get back up and extruding this weekend.

I had to kill a day just extruding a terrible mix of HDPE colorant and ABS.  It was basically a sticky blob that had to be forced through the machine at 225 Degrees.  At that temp it was extruding at about 2" per minute and was brittle, burnt, etc.  It seems to work if you are very careful about your ratio of HDPE colorant to ABS and you control your temp (I will post more on this as I refine what seems to work). If you are off even the slightest bit you get the sticky blob which is why I suggest everyone stick with ABS and ABS colorant for now.

Well, you're certainly putting the machine through its paces! I've only ever fed it natural ABS, and I've never exceeded 200degC. I'm glad the limits are getting pushed!

I figure I can always get the second generation machine from you in a few months once we work out the problems.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

I've been having trouble with alignment between the 4" nipple that holds the hopper and the 3" nipple which holds the hotend.  The two nipples are screwed onto flanges which are bolted back to back.  It turns out the flanges aren't completely flat, so if they are bolted down tight to each other, the nipples are misaligned.  The only way I can keep the auger from binding is if I leave the flanges loose enough to find their own alignment.  I don't know if this will lead to the auger wearing down one side of a nipple or not, because the flanges move a bit as I turn the auger by hand.  It might be better once it is actually mounted to the motor shaft.

I was going to try using a single 8" nipple and got the hopper opening cut out, and then found I couldn't get the auger into the pipe at all.  It turns out the pipe was made by rolling steel and welding the edges, which left a seam on the inside.   All the galvanized and black iron pipes at Lowes and two regional chains had the seams.  I haven't had a chance to check Home Depot.  Brass nipples, while expensive, are completely smooth inside.  However they only go up to 6".  I don't know if having the hot zone 2" shorter would be a problem.

Tim, where did you get the nipples?  It looks like you lucked out and happened to get ones that where drawn rather than welded, unless you have some way to grind down the inside surface.

Re: Filament Extruder - Convert pellets to filament

Did you try all the flanges to see if there's two that are flattest? The ones around the thrust bearing are less critical.

Yup, you can't get them locally in my experience. I found them on McMaster:

Part Number: 44615K524 for the 8". I'm not sure if the hotzone being shorter would be a problem, I think that 8" would be best though because it would keep the hopper plastic cooler.

If none of the flanges are flat, perhaps you could use a washer or two between them on one or two studs, so you can still tighten it? Does that make sense?

I wouldn't worry too much about rubbing in your case, as long as it's not an edge catching. The contamination DeParted saw came from a lip, concentrates the force. If the force is distributed over a larger area, the pressure is much less, so there's not much wear.

Made some green today...there needs to be a better way to coil it though. Doing it by hand sucks...
