Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

check the wire, red mark indicate what they are. ----- is ground +++++ is 5V, signal have words on it.

You will not regret this, you get much better print quality after convert to RAMPS, and lots of fine tune you can do during the printing. You can change hotend temperature in real time, move axis while printing (including z-axis), increase/decrease extrusion amount while printing. Also, switch to E3D and dual extruder (dual color) is possible now. And with E3D layer cooling fan mount, you can now print lot faster.

Not trying to convince or encourage people to convert to RAMPS, NFC tag method and RAMPS each have its pros and cons. NFC tag conversion is faster easier and safter. RAMPS conversion require a lot more skills and higher risk. I think the overall cost is similar in long term.  RAMPS conversion can achieve quieter and faster printing and better quality. And you can use whatever opensource slicer and 3D printer server you choose to.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

Finally finished and turned out better than expected.  Prints much better than the stock form.  Just have to print a bezel for the LCD (siliconed it in).

The rasberry pi on the right is running octoprint.  Just have to print a mount for it and the camera.  The big wire comes from an atx power supply and brings in both 5 and 12 volts.  The LCD light is powered from it also.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

Great job! But I would really recommend print the front panel with white or orange color instead of black.

I can tell the print quality is pretty good, but for front panel job, simple sanding still worth the effort.

https://www.3dhubs.com/knowledge-base/p … nted-parts

Also, I would recommend print one of the knobs, looks better and make adjustment a lot easier. If you print your panel in white, then do a orange knobs, if you do an orange panel, print a white knob.

Well, this are all non-essential extras, as long as it works. But post printing processing can be fun.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

Just wrapping up my modification now. I very nearly completed this in a 24 hour marathon, but tripped myself up at the finish line by leaving my endstop cables connected while I was stripping the wires, and ended up letting the magic smoke out of my RAMPS board (I'm pretty sure it was my RAMPS board, anyway. The Arduino still takes programs and can blink the LED... )

With the number of modifications in Anthem's master branch and my limited understanding of Arduino Sketch, it had too many differences for me to change everything I wanted and have the project still compile, but I have had good success working with the dvjr 1.1.4 branch before the physical switch commit: https://gitlab.com/anthem/Marlin/commit … 0aff61b33a

Items of note:

  • I initially couldn't get my thermistor to register correctly. It's thermistor 1, not 4.

  • Most items will not work until 12v is applied to the board. Display and 'duino will work on USB power, though.

  • The crimpers suggested by Amazon aren't good. I ended up using needle-nosed pliers to manually crimp my connectors after having to throw away a dozen or-so that the crimpers ruined. I have heard great things about the PA 20 and similar crimpers. The heavier/thicker ratcheting crimpers will destroy your terminals, so spring for these or something like them if you need crimpers for the JST terminals and can afford the additional price.

  • The DuPont connector set from Amazon comes in two boxes, and the one with the crimp terminals doesn't contain the 1 lead connectors. They aren't two boxes with the same contents duplicated. I didn't realize that until two days into the bulid (facepalm.gif)

Once my new RAMPS board arrives, I will be able to switch all of my cabling over and let you know how it turned out.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

Got my replacement Ramps 1.4 board yesterday, and I’ve been babysitting Scooty-Puff, Sr. all night so the kids don’t scatter it to the four corners when they wake up.

It does take some getting used to, but I love that now when I have weird problems, I can fix them or find a solution instead of just having to live with the problems/limitations.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

I have heard the new firmware 2.2.7 doesn’t allow reset NFC chips to be used. When you talk about resetting the board to possibly make a repeater, would that same reset allow users to wipe the software version to reinstall an earlier version?

Yes, if you can find an earlier version and prevent the machine from upgrading again.

This is all true but, 2.2.7 does still allow you to use paper tags if you do not want to mod the firmware.

It's the same except you will loose the WiFi if it has it. Once you take the original mainboard out it is nothing but standard printer parts and it is up to you to pinout the motor and endstops in order to connect them to the controller you chose.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

Is there a working marlin firmware that can be used? I have spent 4 days downloading multiple firmware packages and all of them give 100's of errors. I am very mechanically inclined, however software is new to me. Any help is appreciated.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

For starters there is no pre-configured firmware for your machine or board. You just have to take it a step at a time. If you are getting errors during compiling then you have settings set that don't fit your board choice in the beginning of the firmware. Selecting a mega2560 or whatever will preset most of the needed settings for that board. The next issue is if you have an LCD with your ramps then you need to use an older version of Arduino such as version 1.5.x. Newer versions don not know how to use the LCD as it is old tech compared to what newer Arduino does.

You will also need the u8glib library added to your Arduino software so the drivers for the LCD can be compiled into the sketch.

Carl is correct you do not want to use the latest and greatest arduinioIDE   1.6.7 ids the latest version that works with the lcd screen. and for version read post #207 there is a link to marlin that should work fine  once you have the correct arduino installed.

I’m guessing there isn’t a place I can send it and have it programmed either? I’ve downloaded and tried every Arduino ide available and get the same set of errors on everyone. The adding the u8glib online adds more errors regarding terms that are not found anywhere in the codes.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

You could PM one of the guys that have done the conversion on a similar machine and see if they would be willing to send you their sketch and then you can try to compile it. In the IDE are you selecting the right board and comport?

I’ve tried every option under mega 2560 and get the same results.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

what version of the IDE are you using?

Try this version of marlin

https://gitlab.com/anthem/Marlin/commit … 0aff61b33a

Can you compile and load the example program called blink ?? it Will flash the on board led.

I’ve used all of them. I can get marlin X2 to compline online, but as soon as I add u8g, it goes back to 100’s of errors that contain no lines for the actual code.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

with v 1.67 you should not have to add anything.

Re: [HOWTO] Convert Da Vinci Jr to RAMPS 1.4

Well since you are setting up RAMPS then all you need to do is select the RAMPS board in the firmware before compiling. The only file you should be doing anything in is configuration.h. No other files need to be touched. Personally I used Marlin when I converted my Da Vinci 1.0 to RAMPS.

Maybe this can help some.

Exactly how are you adding the 8gu library? It gets added to your IDE, not the firmware.

I’ve downloaded several U8glib folders and uploaded them to the sketch.
