Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

If wardjr cant find a solution I'll pick up a v6 and if 8 people want one I'll see if he wants to do it.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

I just ordered a V6 as well. My issues haven't gone away completely with the new mount. It helps considerably but I think I bent my heatbreak and want to try out a V6 anyway. If anyone wants a mount for the V6 let me know I'll be doing a run of those as well.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

Here is an idea I`m testing on a Bulldog Lite + Hexagon hotend combo

I remove the brass screw from the end of the hexagon and replace it with a heatbrake (the red part in the cad image).

Then I cut the length of the heatbrake so it is as close to the bearing inside the extruder as possible.

This way it is simple to insert new filament and I think it works better when printing soft fiaments.

Nice Mundsen! That is pretty clever.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

I have been working with the new mount plate for the V5 to see if there is a way to make it work for the V6 as well.

http://i.imgur.com/an464bB.jpg?1

Quite frankly, This mount is looser than I had hoped for with the V5 I tried across 3 different E3d V5's to ensure it wasn't the hot end itself.   The good news is that has forced me to come up with a solution for both the V5 & V6.  For the type of printing I like to do ZERO movement/wobble is a requirement.  So after studying my previous setup which was absolutely solid I realized why and how that happened.

http://i.imgur.com/FxbJZh7.jpg?2

See at the top of the E3D V5 there looks like a gap.  I assure you there is no gap and the way I have the wire pressed in forces the E3D into the bottom of the Bulldog.  This makes for difficult installation and removal but other than for taking pictures for this post I have never had to remove it.  I did have to use a round file to make room to install one of the bolts on the bottom of the Bulldog as seen here.

http://i.imgur.com/QiwVsF3.jpg

This allows the two bolts to slightly squish the E3d into the bottom of the Bulldog and that is why I have ZERO movement.
I measured the SS safety tie wire at .040" or basically 1mm.  Notice how snug it sits in place.

http://i.imgur.com/5paVmkd.jpg

All of this led me to this rather simple solution.

http://i.imgur.com/pud0X9e.jpg

I just drew up a quick 2.5 mm spacer and now It will hold the V5 or V6 very snugly.  Of course you need to file a small amount from the cooling fins as I did in the earlier picture to allow tightening of that screw.  Also the height of your spacer may very depending on your printer.

I would like to Thank Steve for his efforts on this as it was a step in the right direction.  Tolerance could be off on the E3d's or the new bracket I simply don't know.

Happy Printing

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

Thanks for the review wardjr,

That's unfortunate your mound didn't fit tight. I am anxious to hear back from everyone else. I hope that is not the case.

Mine locks up tight and doesn't wiggle at all.

Anyway nice solution to take up the slack!

Ill go through my mound again and see if there is something different.

My spare v5 fits fairly snug depending on which side faces it...I believe this is due to E3D's machining tolerance as some areas fit firmly as it is rotated.
I have not bought my Bulldog yet because my birthday is in 2 days and the wife won't tell me what she got (fingers crossed for the XL)...either way, have mine by Jan 1 so I will chime back in then.
For now, back to lurking around on this thread wink

Very nice!

My Bulldog arrives tomorrow and I just got done putting together wardjr's carriage wink
I did find that I had to sand down the left face just a hair because it kept snagging the carriage on one side.
I won't be able to install everything until wednesday, but I will post results

Just got my on and fits pretty good.  As others mentioned, may need to rotate it a bit to fit the snug point.

Sorry guys. It fit mine good. I'll redesign fit the next run.

My apologies.

Elmoret tested all the V6 mounts on several hot ends and says they are all very tight to the point they may need to be sanded slightly. I think that is the way to go from now on. Better to be to tight than to loose.

Any possibility of a thin layer of Kapton tape fitting in there?

In other news I should be making these myself in the near future so I can adjust as needed.

I don't think there is any question that even the loose ones can be used with something like Kapton to snug things up a bit.
I think you are on the right track and it is better that they be a little to tight.  You'll want to be careful with that as well.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

I got my Bulldog XL in the mail yesterday. I didn't have the time (or energy) to start tinkering with it, but I did find the stock mount actually fit a bit more snug.

Did they change their mounts? is there still a lot of extra space in the Z axis fitment?

297

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

Nope. It may have a .2mm (or less) gap, but I have to wiggle it to show the gap.
It certainly seems like they did change their measurements, as I was preparing for U Mold, wire, etc.

Re: RepRapDiscount "Bulldog XL" Geared Metal Extruder on a Solidoodle 3!

Haven't installed mine yet, so I took the opportunity to redesign Lawsy's wire chain to fit the Bulldog
http://i.imgur.com/JkyUCKb.jpg
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:609490

Couldn't find a source file, so the design is a bit crude at the moment, but snaps on tight and holds firm.
EDIT: After installing, I had to redesign the mount to drop a little lower to clear the frame. This has now been fixed. If anyone is interested, click on the given link and be sure to download the ****solidoodle.stl
