Topic: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

I just saw some info from Solidoodle's Facebook page, I haven't seen any posts here:

"The long-awaited hi-resolution Repetier profile is almost ready for a beta release. This will allow Solidoodle owners to print at .1mm resolution (240dpi) or about three times the current resolution. If all goes well TJ will push it out next week. Instead of waiting until we get it 100% polished, we want to push it out right away to let our lead users work their magic. You know who you are - Ian, Dacanh, Gordy, Josh."

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

Looking forward to it.
Im consistently printing at .2 now, prints are getting better by the day.
Can't wait to master .1.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

I don't think they said it here because they've been doing it since day one here.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

In a realated note.... For some reason Repetier Lags like crazy when I use it. Is it something I'm doing wrong? It gets stuck even doing simple infills...

Pronterface works fine though.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

I think i misunderstood the announcement. I just focused on the 240 dpi, so the 0.1 isn't anything new?
Or is this something new code in the software maybe?

Meshmot: I have the same issues with Repetier. In ~5mm radius, the head goes very slowly and fill up alot ABS in that area. The "Small perimeters" have the same speed as the rest. But some cornes goes smooth compared... I think the newest Repetier-install-package contained Slic3r 0.9.6c. Is 0.9.5 preferable?

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

It's not that new,  Ian has a blog post explaining it from a couple months ago.

Occasionally we surprise even ourselves. We always knew that our Solidoodle design was accurate as well as rugged, but until now we didn’t know just how accurate it was. After countless hours of work tweaking the hi-resolution setting, we’ve managed to create prints that are so good that it’s difficult to tell with the naked eye that even they’ve been made by a 3D Printer. Even though the hi-res profile is still in beta testing and the standard resolution is still .3mm, the early results are super encouraging. This kind of resolution is a game changer for a $499 3D Printer.

i want to test this settings...NOW !!!

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

That looks supernice!  It's great that the layer seems lower, but the real thing here is that there is almost zero blobs and misprinted layers. Looking forward to test smile

Smart money is on you acheiving that challenge Ian :-)

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

I'll try to get it done by the end of the weekend.  I have to take a break from printing things to calibrate the printer, and printing things to use on printer, and print some actual non printer projects.   I had thought at the beginning that I want the printer to enable a hobby, and not have 3D printing be a hobby by itself, like those people who build 3D printers so they can use them to just build more 3D printers.   Once you get started, its hard not to tinker.  It's getting to be like turning my stock car into a hot rod that I will use to drive to the grocery store.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

Except the trip will be much faster and you will want to do it more often! I enjoy the tinkering and am already using mine for both hobby and enterprise. Unfortunately, my job has been consuming too much of my free time the last few weeks.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

It had to be done-

http://solidoodletips.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/img_31761.jpg

The most important thing is to go slow.  Small errors and inconsistencies show a lot easier at .1mm, and the Solidoodle will be more accurate at slow speeds.  This one was mostly 30mm/s, with 20mm/s for outer perimeters.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

Incredible results!

Can you tell us something about the process?
  - Is there any new firmware/software?
  - Modifications on the board?
  - Smaller nozzle?

Very Impressive Ian! Glad to see you are getting good results.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

I used KISSlicer, but here is a Slic3r profile.  The filament settings are based on my using 109 for my E steps/mm.

My KISSlicer settings are in this thread - http://www.soliforum.com/topic/348/kisslicer/

I changed the layer height to .1 and the thread width to .35, and turned up the perimeters to 4, and the speeds down to 30.  With .1mm layers you will usually need a couple more perimeters and solid layers.

I haven't had very good quality with Skeinforge 50 and .1 layers.  In Skeinforge 39 (which Solidoodle supports) you would need to set the Flow Rate to 1/3 of whatever you use for .3mm layers.

thank you smile

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

What was the print time on this little guy?

22

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

Hour and half maybe?  Seems right, since the big ones were around 3+, and this was scaled 50%.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

Thanks for the ini-file info. Now the layers are "invisible"!

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

I just printed a little yoda too with Ian's ini file. I got a bit of slag, but am so impressed with the outcome.

Re: Solidoodle announces Highres printing

Can you post a picture?  It would be interesting to compare since they are from different slicers.
