Topic: Long time listener, first time caller

Just got my Filastruder today and noticed there are no angle brackets in the package. Is there any reason why these can't be printed instead? Does anyone *roughly* know the dimensions?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Well that's a bummer. I'm happy to send you some.

They can be printed or skipped altogether, they're just meant to hold the main support in place while you drive the screws in underneath. If you use another block of wood or something to hold it perpendicular while you drive the screws, you can skip them.

Thank you for that! In light of my options, I think I'll make due with what I got

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

I may be over thinking this, but I'd rather be safe and ask.
The nipple will not thread all the way unless I apply a concerning amount of force. Obviously, this prevents the hopper from sliding all the was to the flange.

I have been browsing the "...in the wild" thread and I've seen at least one where the threads were visible.
Thanks for any/all responses

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

NPT pipe threads are tapered, they don't go in all the way.

The hopper doesn't need to slide up to the flange, just centered over the cutout is fine. The cutout was moved away from the flange to allow clearance for enclosures and large hoppers.

Thanks again, Tim. Nice to know I haven't screwed this up yet. Seems pretty straightforward once you get the ball rolling.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Almost done wiring, but for the life of me I can't get the auger/coupler to stay put against the motor while compressing the thrust bearing. Any tips?

Also, upon inspection on other units among the forum, I've found others have 5 boards sandwiched whereas mine has 3. Is this a concern or effect operation?

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

1.) Mount center support
2.) Slide the auger such that the thrust bearing is compressed using one hand
3.) Place the motor & motor mount on the base with the other hand, coupling slid on
4.) Using hand you had on the auger, mark the base with a pencil (trace the bottom of the motor mount)
5.) Mount motor mount to base

I don't think there's ever been 5 sandwiched together. There's been 4 and there's been 3, the difference doesn't impact anything. My laser cutter went down for 2 weeks so I had to conserve inventory.

Assembly has taken longer than I had hoped due to an insane schedule. But I felt like sharing something I whipped up.

Looks good!

I put one together that looks a lot alike, but I like the screw holes for the board - I didn't do that in mine, the board just floats.

Thanks! I'm hoping the board doesn't overheat. With a heatsink and an opening or two, I think it will be fine.
I have an Akita/mix, so an excessive amount of dog fur (which gets everywhere) is a concern.

For some reason I wasn't able to add the files for those wanting to make this. hmm

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

I've run mine for about 10-15 hours since I added the stall protection board, and have had no problems with overheating to my knowledge. And on top of it the whole 'struder is enclosed in foam board (helps a bit with noise).

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

I run those boards at about 1/3rd of their rated capacity. It shouldn't get hot unless you're setting it above nominal current.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Got my Filastruder fully assembled, loaded hopper and performed PID autotuning. The cool part is that the autotuning completed exactly 10 mins after reaching temp. However, the pipe rotated 15 degrees, forcing me to shut the motor off as stated in the instructions. I let the heat sit for another 5 minutes, turned the motor back on, and got 1/2" of filament!!!....until the pipe rotated about 30 degrees.
So with the hopper sitting at a 45 degree angle, I shut it all down. Under the theory that it may be from not tightening the pipe enough during assembly, I removed heating band/thermistor/flange bolts, but the cooled material inside will not allow me to slide the front pipe/flange assembly out.

Is my theory correct that it is entirely mechanical?
Also, should I heat it back up before attempting to tighten or loosen?

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

You'll want to do autotuning with the fan on for best results, the fan changes the thermal dynamics.

You probably didn't tighten the barrel enough, no worries. Just remove the 4 bolts, slide the barrel+auger assembly out, rotate 90deg, reinstall. As long as the cutout is within 45 deg of vertical you're good to go.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

I reassembled three times today and the pipe is still rotating hmm
https://vimeo.com/135195343
At the end of the video just as I shut the motor off, there was a pop and seemed like there was an alignment shift. Everything is tight as a drum and seems straight, so I'm wondering if the pipe is a little twisted at the nozzle end?

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Umm, in that video you aren't anywhere near 180C!

The red numbers are the current value. You're running the motor with solid plastic in the barrel.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Saw both responses you made. big_smile big_smile
1) I know it was under temp by a crapload. After the last attempt at purging, I turned off the motor and left the heat on for a few seconds to clear ooze a bit more from behind the nozzle so I can turn it for a split second once reassembled if it still turned. It was an attempt to save time from heating all the way up, let sit, then see if I failed.
2) The instructions said to let it sit for 10 minutes...I'll try 15 next time
3) This happens even when reaching temp and the pipe turns within a minute of operation, so I think your original post on SP may be the solution. The turns made are to be done after bottoming them back to zero, correct? May be a stupid question, but I know some manufacturers have a standard setting the prefer shipping out at.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

The stall protection board just keeps the motor from doing something damaging if things go wrong. In normal operation, it does nothing. With that said, the adjustments don't bottom out - they're endless turn. You should be able to hear a click, but if not then rotating CCW a couple dozen turns will get them back to zero.

I'd say let it get to temp, wait 20 minutes (to be extra safe), then turn it on and let it run until the barrel stops rotating. If this advice breaks something, I'll replace it.

I haven't messed with the SP, but I let it bathe for 20min this time and I got several yards without rotation. Thank you!

I have noticed there are kinks in the filament. The end of the barrel is rotating 360 degrees (slowly) as the auger turns which is what I believe is causing this effect. I'm thinking either the support isn't square with the motor, or I should just go vertical and be done with it. Maybe both.

I'm ecstatic with the Filastruder!

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

You should be able to get rid of the waves by adjusting the position of the filament guide.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Just an update:
I nearly eliminated the waves by holding the Filastruder vertical briefly during operation.
I am still purging, but I am happy to report .02+/- diameter consistency.

Re: Long time listener, first time caller

Hello, I am having the same problem with the rotating barrel, even though I tightened it a lot! How did you end up solving this problem in the end? And what do I do now that the barrel is full of PLA? I am running it at a set temperature of 180 c which ends up around 173 c with the fan on (still got to do the autotuning). PLA is 4034 by Natureworks.
