Topic: Extruder motor "Ticking"
Just started hearing a weird ticking on my SD3. Finally figured out it was the extruder motor. What causes this and how is it fixed?
Just really bugged by the sound.

Does it make the same sound when in manual control just extruding?
I had the same problem today with my SD3. I loosened the tightening screw and it went away. Let us know if this does not work.
Which screw?
I loosened the tensioning screw on the extruder. The one that grips the filament. I don't like it to mark the filament. I think, in my case, this was what was causing the ticking noise.
Another take on this issue: Have you loaded new firmware?
I was just experimenting with making sure I could load and restore the firmware, and found that with the new Marlin beta firmware loaded, printing a test cube make the extruder start clacking when it retracted at the corner. Putting back the original firmware then made it even worse till I also put back the original eeprom, then the test cube was perfect again and all clacking noises stopped:
Didn't have problems with the ticking sound until I moved the unit from a windows 7 machine to a mac 10.6 machine. Lots of weird things are happening when using the mac.
Loosening the tension screw is a bad idea as the filament can just be stripped. If it is just ticking on occasion you may just need to reduce your flow multiplier. I had that problem too.
