If it is just ticking on occasion you may just need to reduce your flow multiplier. I had that problem too.

I was just experimenting with making sure I could load and restore the firmware, and found that with the new Marlin beta firmware loaded, printing a test cube make the extruder start clacking when it retracted at the corner. Putting back the original firmware then made it even worse till I also put back the original eeprom, then the test cube was perfect again and all clacking noises stopped:

The one that grips the filament. I don't like it to mark the filament. I think, in my case, this was what was causing the ticking noise.
