Topic: How do I Add A Lcd Controller To My Sanguinololu Board? [Solidoodle 2]

Hi, first post to the forum's, I have recently bought an lcd controller for my solidoodle 2 with a Sanguinololu board. I have been printing with the solidoodle for a few years now and I want to be able to disconnect my printer from my computer, because I have had failed prints before due to computer interruptions.

The one I bought: tinyurl.com/mdkgpg6

I was wondering what I have to do before I install and run this lcd controller, do I need to reprogram the board, if so, how? Or is it just plug and play?

Thanks,
Allen

Hi Allen2688 ,     I believe you have to update the firmware and enable LCD and SD support in the firmware . If you search this forum there is a thread for doing this I am sure .  I have an SD 3 with the Printrbot board Rev E so I can't be of much more help to you.    Good luck     Bill D

SD3, RAMPS 1.4, Lawsy's carriages modified by me, 2 SSRs, E3D V6, 2 Power supplies, Independent monitoring of both power supplies (amps and volts) also extruder and bed temps, Blue Tooth connectivity, bearings in all axis & rotational points, Y axis direct drive.  Remotely controlled power box on / off . Gecko Tec build plate . Renamed FrankenDoodle

You also need to upgrade the microprocessor to one that has more memory (1280?).  Search here for Panelolu and you should turn up some threads about adding an LCD to a sanguinololu based SD.

After having read that post, I was left with the impression that it would be FAR easier to just upgrade to a RAMPS or RUMBA board that is ready to go with an LCD controller.  Sure its more expensive but there are other benefits too and time is money as well.

Darn, I was really hoping to keep the same controller. I have a ramps all programmed for an lcd screen with marlin firmware, but that's going on my prusia i3 build. so, is there no way to do this? (Im not sure if this helps but its not a smart lcd so the program is a little smaller)

Post which LCD you have and maybe we could help you more.

But if all you want is to run your printer without your PC, you could get an old tablet (cheaply off craigslist or ebay) and install the G-code printr app.  This is one of the ways I run my printer and I am extremely happy with it.  It should takes just a few minutes to setup and then you have a full tablet screen to control your printer instead of just a small LCD.

Here is the link to the LCD, it's a  Sanguinololu Board Reprap LCD2004 controller w/ adapter SD Card Reader

Well it looks like that LCD and the sang board were designed for each other so it should not be too bad.  I don't have that board but you probably just have to reflash the board with the u8glib library or similar library.  Hit up google and reprap.org, I'm sure it is will documented.  Good luck.
