Quick update on the kossel build. I can't fit the top section onto the bottom section. The top 2020 slots on the parts are just not dimensionally accurate. I've filed the insides, trimmed the burrs off with a hobby knife, and done everything I can but I literally cannot even hammer the parts into place.

This kit has been a nightmare. Barely any of the printed parts have even usable, and I am just terribly aggravated. The kit is a great value in the same way a car with no brakes, doors, and hood is a good value.

I guess I got mine when they where trying to make an impression and cared. Mine is going up for sale though once I rebuild it. Hope my printed parts fit.

Baron sorry to hear of the struggles. But I am glad heartless is helping you out.

I too am seriously pondering this kit. But would very likely pay the extra $ 50 and get these aluminum connectors.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Hey everyone. My printer should be arriving on Monday or Tuesday. Can't wait to try it! I really hope that everything fits right. At least I can print out some replacement parts at work (and in polycarb!).

Just wanted to share my new nightmare with you: So the Kossel Kit from Folger was $350. Then Shipping was $50 to Ontario - really the shipping is only an 8 hour drive. However, I completely forgot about Duty charges! I was notified yesterday that duty will be $130!!!!!!! OH MY GOD. So that brings my total cost over $500. So much for the cheap option....... I should have simply bought a more expensive printer from Canada. DAAAMN. This sucks. Live and learn I guess.

I'll post pictures of the build process! I don't have a dremel but hopefully a drill and my multitool/knife will be enough to make everything fit.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

There is a Chinese company on Ebay that sells a kit of all the plastic for the  mini Kossel. The cool thing is all the parts are injection molded, not printed. Its 58 bucks with free shipping. Of course from China will take two to three weeks to receive.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Well got it all torn down and went to fit the uprights into my new printed pieces and low and behold they are too small. Measured the opening and it is 19.98. Should be 20.19 or so. Now I have to go back and reprint them on my now recalibrate machine and see if they fit. Ran out of Neon yellow so I guess it will be red.

It looks like I printed these back when I though I was calibrated and was not. So take this as a lesson. Make sure your steps per mm on each axis are properly set or just a hair over if you want to fit metal parts into your prints.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Those are so pretty! Once it's running I'll have to print some lowers and effector pieces to match. I'm planning on painting my SD3 frame (since I have it stripped out at the moment) a light blue once the weather changes and it isn't raining. Gotta make it all look nice!

What brand filament is that? I might have to buy a roll.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

that is Octave brand green - this one: http://www.octave.com/p1173433093/Octav … _info.html (they have 2 greens) definitely worth the cost.

Prints really nicely - been running at 105 on the bed with hairspray, 235 hotend (E3D v6) on my SD4, and getting really nice results with it. But the Octave filament has been great in pretty much all the colors we have tried (we have 6 rolls from them, all different colors).
The blue/blue glow in the dark has been kind of a pain - haven't quite hit the perfect temp for it yet I think - definitely likes it lower than most ABS.

Kinda annoyed that I have to cut this threaded rod. They included a hack saw blade. Gee real helpful.

I used my dremel. I made the mistake of cutting the carbon fiber first and it wore that poor blade out. I could not even cut butter with it once the carbon fiber worked it over.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

I used a different hacksaw blade for the carbon fiber (smaller teeth, riker profile), used a dremel for the threaded rod.

Here's a fun update, though. I got a response from Folgertech. They informed me that they are having problems with their US supplier of printed parts (they don't print in house) and they are switching to machined corners later this month on kossel kits.

...they offered me a discount on purchasing the cnc'ed corner pieces once they come out.

huh... kinda makes me glad we went ahead and reprinted all of the 2020 Prusa parts in the color of our choice right from the start... used one piece that came with it and that was the belt holder under the bed - and it has since been replaced with one that can provide adjustable tension. smile

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Yeah, I will admit my reply was rather terse. I just asked them straight up if I am ever going to get a working kit out of this or if I should push for a refund. I don't see why I should have to pay for replacement parts if they are knowingly shipping bad parts. It's like if all the tires on your new car blew out and they went "yeah, we have been having problems with those tires. I can give you a discount on new ones, though" instead of actually replacing the tires.

I doubt they would give me a refund anyway since I already cut the threaded rod and carbon fiber, but this whole build has been awful. I am also having my doubts about the new slider they sent since it still doesn't move as smoothly as the other ones (same problem as the first, just not as bad), but I really can't test it until I have a working machine. It might just need some weight on it to even it out.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

Wonderful, thank you.

The new slider was sent sans rail. They got a bunch separate and I am comfortable swapping them out. They probably assumed it was good but didn't want to try testing it because if you're not careful swapping the sliders out you can end up with bearings everywhere. If it was part of the same batch that my crap one came from, though, it really doesn't fix the problem.

The sad part is even if I buy a new slider and pay to get new printed parts, it's STILL a better deal for a kit than most kossels.

yeah, I hear ya - the other half has been looking at kossel kits and some of them are VERY pricey! he sent me link to one a week or so ago that was $1300 - in kit form!

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

That's exciting. From what I've dealt with so far, I almost feel bad for the guys at Folger. They didn't make the plastic parts or the slides that have been giving me trouble, and they have been pretty good about replacing bad parts. I am just getting frustrated and I feel like they are getting just as frustrated as I am.
