Printing pretty well so far! I tightened up all the motor mounts and effector mounts (superglued myself in the process) and its printing a little more accurately now. The motors are still running craaazy hot, but if I turn them down even a 1/8th of a turn then they skip. I hope they don't burn out. For some reason the Iron Throne stopped printing near the top - overheat perhaps?

PS. It looks like my print diameter is 6". The radius is 76mm which I may be able to push a little bit. That's rather small but I think this printer can print things pretty tall. Guessing about 14cm height but I havn't tested that yet.

Delta printers where designed with height in mind over width.  If your motors are hot I would advise you to print one or more sets of motor mounts while you can. On long prints the motors can get hot enough to make the mount soften and cause the motor to angle upward under belt tension. That is why mine looks like it was just unpacked again.

I will definitely do that. Perhaps I will print them in polycarbonate at work so they will stay heat proof. If I had more powerful motors would that help my situation?

I have a feeling I will have lots of 3d printer parts in the mail today. This is both fortunate and unfortunate, because I have to make 40 beer coozies tonight before I can play with printers and I am operating on about 3 hours of sleep for the whole week. Still, by this weekend is out I shall have a working delta!

What vref did you set them at? Should be around .350 or less. Try for the least needed. Are you linear slides easy to move?

vref? I've been setting the power with the little dials on the stepper controllers on the bottom of the ramps board. One of my sliders is kinda sticky.

Vref is the setting you are adjusting. Did you follow the guide the Folgers provided on calibrating the stepper drivers?  There is an actual voltage measurement you have to take on each stepper driver while you adjust. Connect your meters ground to the power supply ground its case is fine. Then carefully without touching anything else touch the top of the pot, the little thing you are adjusting. You should try for the minimum value but no more than .350mv. Ideally needs to be around .250 or less to run cool. I would lube your rails with a light machine oil as well.

That would be a required tool in your printer tool box. Home Depot has them for 30 bucks. You will need it for trouble shooting down the road and you will have trouble at some point. It's just the nature of the beast.

So my lately problem is that the tension from the springs is warping the metal bed. Time for glass I guess. I hope the bed is not too deformed. Perhaps some lighter springs would help.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

how thick is the metal bed?

I doubt it is the springs causing the deformation, but rather the heat & cool cycles on something that is too thin.

I got my new upper supports from Heartless last friday, didn't have a chance to put them in yet since one of the screws stripped out when I tried to remove it from the old uppers. Print quality seems excellent, though. Thank you!

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

So I got all my plastic done started my rebuild over the weekend and made a $50 mistake. I have done this same step on several build plates with no issues. But this one time just had to blow it. I always preheat the plate to 220f on my electric range to aid in soldering the wires to it. So as usual I did it again. I wanted to swap out the ridgid wire they supplied with some hogh flex I normally use.

So I got it hot, removed the old wire, and put on the new, turned off the burner to let it cool then went to the living room to resume build. Then I smelled something burning, looked up to see a smokey kitchen. Instead of turning it off I turned it to high and this is what I got.

Now I can spend 60 for one from a US supplier which there is only one. Or I can spend 30 on ebay from  Chinese supplier and wait 3 weeks to a month.

Oh man that sucks. Maybe you can bake it back on. Put it in the oven with some large dishes on top to flatten it down perhaps? Worth a try I guess.

Re: Folger Tech Kossel Unboxing and First Impressions (Pic Heavy)

oof, carl, that's an impressive one as far as oopsies go. Personally, I'd get some copper clad board, draw on the traces with a permanent marker, and etch it to make a new PCB heater. Actually, i'd use my vinyl plotter to make a mask, but I'm assuming you don't have a vinyl plotter.

That method of preheating the aluminum isn't a bad idea, though. If I didn't have a gas range I'd try the same. Maybe I'll attach a thermalcouple to the toaster oven and give that a go.

Folger's parts finally arrived last night, but the m3 screws are stripping out when I try to remove the bearings and such from the old parts (since they were printed too small, I had to force the screws in a little hard). Might have to go to the hammer/chisel method and just replace the screws.  Hopefully this weekend I'll have a little time to work on them, but I'm honestly not sure. A lot of personal stuff is conspiring against me.

Thought about it, but figured with the amount of aggravation these have caused me I might be better off with a little hammer diplomacy. Going to switch to flat head cap screws when I put it back together so I can countersink them for a more finished look.
