Topic: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

The other half ordered one of the aluminum 2020 i3 Prusa kits from Folger Tech - we have confirmation it is being shipped out - hopefully arrives by the end of the week...

Anyone else order one?

We have printed out the first 30 pages of the build guide - found it interesting that they are not 100% complete yet...ends at step 23 - mount & wire end stops... (supposed to be updated today)

Thought this would be a good spot to share build info, problems, solutions, etc, with anyone else that is getting one of these.

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

It's tempting, but when I get paid this thursday I'll probably order one of the kossel kits instead. The folger tech stuff looks pretty decent.

Remember kids, always run two 3d printers. That way, when one breaks you can use the other one to fix it!

SD3 w/ RUMBA (8825s), merlin hot end (in pieces). Ender3 w/ silent board for PLA printing. Ender5 w/ silent board, e3d v6, new z lead screw, and glass bed. DiY Kossel w/ smoothieboard (in pieces). Vellman Vertex (in pieces)
Shapeoko2 router in process of being converted to laser engraver (in pieces)
Multicam 5000 series CNC Router w/ 11HP spindle, 5x10' table, and auto tool changer (in pieces)

and there you have it! LOL

in our case tho - the other half is kind of bumming that I have "taken over" the SD4... he hardly ever gets to play with it. LOL
that is what happens when I have too much time available to tinker with it, and he has almost no time...

Funny thing about this one is, as a kit, guess who is gonna get stuck with assembly?? you got it - ME! He claims he will help if it gets here before this weekend... we shall see... LOL

Pfft, if you build it, it counts as yours. You can tell him a guy on the internet says so.

LOL, Thanks, Baron!! LOL I will do that! LOL big_smile

If he wants it to be his, HE has to build it! LOL (like that will happen - he doesn't "build" - maintain and tinker, yes - build, no - his own words "I don't have the patience for building")

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

Building is my absolute favorite part of what I do. Starting with nothing and ending up with something is pretty much my favorite joy in life. I absolutely hate, however, when I get a kit for something and it's missing parts.

Tomorrow is my birthday, and I think I will celebrate by ordering a kossel kit. Here's hoping both of our projects go well!

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

Well, Happy Birthday a little early!

Hoping both of our builds go well, too! LOL actually cant wait to get the kit here and dive into it. Should be fun - with or without the other half's help, LOL (more fun to do things together tho)

and I am with you, I love creating things! downloading something from thingiverse was ok in the beginning, but modeling something from scratch, and then watching it become reality on the printer - that is just cool to me.

I got the foldgers Kossel kit. Its not bad. Prints well, but I am rebuilding mine with neon yellow plastics. I also used  a B3 Pico hot end instead of the E3D clone it comes with.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

She really is! I was honestly shocked; I didn't even tell her I wanted it until a couple weeks ago and I though it would take longer for Folgertech to put the kit together. As soon as I heard the aluminum 2020s slide around in the box I just lit up.

I will have to do a proper unboxing article later. The box looked absolutely destroyed when it came in and tonight I have to inventory everything and see what is broken.

Oh, and thanks for the birthday wishes everybody! I will print out that cake once I have it set up (before calibration, even! Let's see how wonky the default settings are) and give a full report on my thoughts on the kit.

You will damage it if you do that.  Unlike the box printers, deltas must be calibrated before even trying to make a move. You have to put your rod lengths in the firmware as well as the distance from the effector/rod end to the tower. But most important confirm your motor current is adjusted to about 1.5. Otherwise the motors get hot enough to soften the ABS mounts and the belt tension will make the bend upward. I am know having to reprint the lower mounts on mine. I decided to just reprint all the plastic in neon yellow. Black was boring for such a cool printer.

Dont forget to pick up a spool of PLA if you dont already have one.

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

I shouldn't have said before calibration, I meant more before dialing it in. Like when you've only math hammered your steps/mm instead of measuring, etc. I love that first print where you learn your 25x25 box is actually 20x32.

The ABS mounts look pretty sturdy, but there really isn't anything to vent the heat out of those motors. If it wasn't so busy, I'd throw some steel in the 5 axis at work and see about making the world's toughest kossel mounts big_smile As it is, I will take your suggestion to heart and be really careful about tuning.

I have heard some people have resolution issues with kossels at 1/16 microstepping. Is it worth putting in some of my spare 1/32 drivers in there or does the 1/16 work well for you?

When mine was printing the 1/16 was fine. Now that I am tearing mine down I am going to replace the RAMPS with my Azteeg X5 mini and a Viki II LCD. The X5 was actually designed more for a Delta as the Axis are called Alpha, Beta, and Gamma as they should be instead of XYZ.

I did away with the autolevel. It was wonky as all get out. When I rebuild I am going to add spring loaded levelers to the bed like most printers have and level by hand with a feeler gauge. The is very little info on how to even setup or calibrate the auto level system or even how to use it.

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

Congrats on the awesome birthday present, Baron! what a great mom! big_smile

Our 2020 Prusa i3 kit arrived yesterday! YAY! and let me tell ya, it was difficult for me to not rip the box open right away - but I didn't, I let the other half open it up when he got home and start sorting thru the stuff.

We sat down last night and went thru the build guide and all the pieces/parts, taking inventory to make sure everything was there, bagging and marking all the screws, nuts and other hardware, and guess what? there are 2 very important pieces missing! the M5 threaded Z rods were not in the box! yikes

so email was sent off to Folgertech late last night. As of this moment there hasn't been a response yet, but they haven't opened for the day yet, either.... so we shall see.

In the meantime, the other half has found some M5 threaded rod locally (shock of shocks in this small town!) but we need to make sure it is of the correct pitch before purchasing (if needed)...gonna wait and see what Folgertech says before doing anything.

Overall, despite the missing Z rods, the kit looks pretty good. Printed parts look decent, although I suspect they are PLA (shiny) and not very dense - compared one of my test PLA lawsy carriages to one of their pieces of a similar size - mine is definitely heavier.

The nice thing is they make the STLs for the printed parts readily available, so I see some high density ABS parts being printed out in the very near future (starting today? LOL) we are thinking of making this one in Lime Green. smile (the SD4 is purple & yellow) yeah, black is boring! LOL

The motors in this kit are nice - pretty impressive if the markings are correct - 50oz/in of holding torque - on the smaller ones.

Kinda of looking forward to starting assembly - don't need the threaded rods right away so I can easily start on the base and get the ball rolling...

Re: Who else is getting one of the Folger Tech 2020 i3 Prusas?

Well... our faces our a little red... (insert embarrassed smilie here)

turns out the threaded rods were in the package after all - taped to the underside of the aluminum bed plate! completely missed them, they are so small. LOL

I guess being a new kit there was no comprehensive list of parts on one piece of paper yet, some of the bags had parts listed for that bag, but not all of them...

so All parts are present and accounted for, time to start building!

It could have been a lot worse! my threaded rod was taped with the carbon fiber rods, so at least I knew where to look for it. We all make mistakes big_smile

Your threaded rod is for a different purpose. Yours will actually be cut by you into 12 about 1.5 inch sections to be glued into the carbon fiber rod that you will also have to cut. Hope you have several saw blades because the one they supply will not make it through all the cuts you need to make on the carbon fiber. If you have a dremel and cut off wheels use them for the threaded rod.

Yep, I know what the rod is for and i have a plethora of cutting tools at my disposal. I just have to make sure I have some spare nuts for deburring and it should be good.

Been a super busy weekend!

Started building Friday afternoon, went flying Saturday morning, shooting Saturday afternoon, more building Saturday evening, and finished building Sunday... cant understand how I could be tired? LOL
