Your support has been 1000x better than Solidoodles smile

I know if I end up going the DIY route to fix all these issues that I'll find plenty of help here on the forums, but I was really hoping to not have to do this kind of stuff just to get a brand new printer up and running. As an engineering student, I really don't have much free time these days and I don't know when I would ever find the time to completely reassemble this printer. But the lawsy carriage mod seems like something I would have liked to do down the line anyway, so it's not the end of the world if I have to go that route.

Ideally I would like Solidoodle to just send me a working printer free from defects. Is that too much to ask?

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Your current printer running on linear bearings is going to be light years beyond a brand new, out of the box workbench. Installing the carriages really only takes an hour or so the first time and the improvements are very significant. I was the user who offered to send you bearings by the way.

I know the frustrations you are feeling and we have all been there in some form or another. When you give up on Solidoodle and take the machine's performance into your own hands, you become much happier with your machine. Would I recommend anyone buy a Solidoodle? Hell no. But you own it now and we'll help you get it working better than it did out of the box.

"By makers, for makers" (the Solidoodle slogan) essentially means "you better be willing to fix this crap." They're nice printers if you make the right modifications.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

this is making me thrilled knowing i sent mine back to solidoodle to fix the fing board. But at this point i have to say Nachieyvo (sp) which is basicly the english translation for a russain word that means fuck it it can't be helped. if i get my printer back anytime soon i'll help you too and ward i'd be interested in seeing stl's for those upgraded carriages you spoke of. I downloaded lawsey's but if yours are better...

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Does anyone know the process for slightly adjusting the extruder height? My left extruder is slightly lower than the right, so that when I print with only the right extruder the left one drags across everything and pushes the bed down. I was planning to just loosen them both if that's easy enough, bring the bed to 0, rest them on the bed, and tighten them back up.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

You have the right idea with resting them on the bed. It's not so important that they are level, but more important that they are parallel with the bed - since SoliTouch will compensate for the bed being potentially unlevel.

Alternatively, you can adjust the bed to match the extruders instead of adjusting the extruders to match the bed. IMO, it's easier to turn a few wingnuts rather than loosen the barrels and attempt to move them precisely.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

While it sounds easier, making the bed unlevel to match the uneven-ness of the extruders seems like something I want to avoid. I'd rather fix it the right way even if it is a little harder.

Chancrescolex,

I have the same problem with my extruders and I am seeing that is crashing my printing.
Who know how fix that?

I figured it out on my own. If you swivel the top extruder fans outwards, you'll see a screw that lines up with each of the hot ends. If you loosen those you can wiggle the hot ends and move them up or down. I loosened the one that was lower and brought the bed up so that it was touching the other one which made them both perfectly level. Warming up for some test printing now.

Having some issues with extrusion. I think I might have to do a z-offset calibration.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

SoliPrint isn't configured correctly for the Workbench Apprentice. It thinks the print center is at 100,100. It should be at 75,75 since the bed is 150x150. When the z-offset calibration runs, the last line prints right on the edge of the plate and the number gets printing off the plate.

At the moment, SoliPrint is only compatible with Solidoodle Press, and no other.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

For you guys that were suggesting upgrading to lawsy carriages, are the ones on thingiverse compatible with the dual extruders that the Workbench Apprentice has?

The left and right should be but the extruder carriage would need to be tweaked.

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

Finally received a response from Solidoodle. Only took them 5 days.

Hi Jared:

I had my production department built a printer from scratch, that is to be inspected by my supervisor today. Your printer should be shipped out by the end of the day. We are going to send it along with a roll of Natural filament. Once it arrives, unbox and inspect the printer. If there no visible issues, get the printer setup and connected. Once you are able to see that the printer is in great condition and decide that you are going to keep it, I will then send you another RMA and return label for you to send the printer, you have now, back to us.

Best,
Daniel

Re: Need advice on how to handle a situation with Solidoodle

I have only had to contact Solidoodle Support twice, and both times they got back to me in less than 48 hours. I know they get a lot of bad press (no pun intended) but I personally have found them to be really good.

I've contacted them more times than I can count. Some of them have been issues and others just general questions. The majority of the time they get back to me within 48 hours. A few times they had gotten back to me the same day. Several other times it took 5+ days to get a response. But my opinion of their customer service is not based solely on their response time.

Yeah I know you've had some real issues and it wasn't pleasant to read! Sorry for that, but hopefully they will now put it right. You may end up with the best Press possible out of this.

The printer in question by the OP is a Workbench Apprentice not a Press.
