Topic: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

So, I've read about the rumba boards on reprapdiscount. They have a great package with that, and a bunch of other stuff

But what is the main improvement to expect? I can see having not always on fans might be nice. And a display, but what are the other advantages?

I can see the advantages to upgrading to direct drive, and better carriages. And the E3D, But this isn't as clear?

If you do, which stepper motor drivers are best?

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Extra drivers and mosfets so it's ready for future upgrades. More reliable driver options, since they're replaceable. More flexibility in fan operation. More standard board config so to speak so easier on marlin mods front. Can also support more heated bed options due to separate supply rails.

As for overall why.. Main reason is the drivers or bed upgrades..  But by the same token.. Of coursa if none of this is relevant right now it's not a necessity - it's not going to improve your prints as much as give you better flexibility.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Ah! That's what I was curious about.

I think y direct drive, and then moving to gt2 plus Lawsy's linear carriages are probably my best bets.

A new z screw maybe.

Thanks

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Lawsy carriages would be far and away the best mechanical upgrade you can make right away. that and new, more robust pulley blocks for the front Y belt pulleys (my stock ones cracked making for some interesting print issues).

I am still running the stock belts & pulleys and Z screw, no other real changes aside from a bed stabilizer in the front to keep shaking to a minimum and a fan on the X motor. I even still have the stock SD hot-end. My prints have improved dramatically with the Lawsy carriages - cleaner, more dimensionally accurate, and circles are actually circles now instead of circular shapes flattened on 2 sides.

Cutting print-head drag by installing the linear bearings in the Lawsy carriages will go a lot further towards better prints than changing to direct Y drive will, in my humble opinion. the bearings make getting proper even tension on the belts much easier, too.

Don't get me wrong - direct Y drive does seem to be a nice improvement, but, personally, I wouldn't be going there first. Just my 2 cents worth...

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

As I've mentioned elsewhere, I had a set of Lawsy linear bearing carriages printed by Shapeways. I wanted really good quality. I 've also ordered new rods from Solidoodle which finally have arrived. And a new direct Y mounting system.

I'm not going to do it all at once though. I think it would be difficult to figure out where I've screwed up (if i do)

So

- direct y drive
- E3D (assuming I get the machining back) and power supply
- linear upgrade
- GT2
- new heater and print bed.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

FYI, solidoodle is probably not the best choice for rods.  They use cheap ones that are of poor tolerance.  Mine did not last long before carriage binding started.  I would have recommended McMaster.com or folgertech.com if you are in the US.  I have ordered rods from both of these and can vouch for the quality.  Or Misumi if you want to pay a little more and get them cut to your length.  But lets hope you got a good set if they are already in hand.

Yup, one thing at a time is a good idea. smile

of your list, I would change things around a little, but I know everyone has thier own preferences/priorities...
me, I would go in this order:
- linear upgrade (done - Love it!)
- E3D and power supply (I already have an upgraded psu, but the E3D is on my wish list)
- new heater and print bed. (undecided between this & the E3D as being the next project)
- direct y drive (with bearings, not the bushings)
- GT2, or maybe fishing line - after the stock belts are pretty much done.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Isn't shapeways all nylon stuff? If be worried there would be too much flex in those carriages (bearing in mind there is a surprising amount of force the moment you add leverage via rods...)

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Looking at reprapdiscount, they have a kit

RUMBA Big Box with Smart LCD controller, Endstops, MK2B Heatbed, 1 wiring set - capable of 24V- 1 x RUMBA board(black) ($165)
RUMBa
- MK2B Dual Power
- 6 A4988
- SmartLCD incl 4gb SD card
- 3 GT2 Belts and Pulleys (have)
- Set of Hall Endstops
- Set of Mechanical Endstops
- 2 x EPCOS 100K thermistors (have in heater and E3D)
- 1 x Ceramic screwdriver
- 1 x 40x40mm Fan

I already have some of these items, and don't intend to replace the header with this bad (using the e3D Silicone instead)

Is this the best value?

Still trying to find the appropriate stepper motors to replace all mine.

Finding a US supplier for the exact steppers is tough one. Any suggestions? That Nema 17 is tricky (same with finding fan for it)

I really want the power controlled fans I think... especially on the [[[[[[

This is the one I got as the DRV8825's were more important than a controller to me.

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL
Thanks to all for your contributions

Wow - "product is no longer available" ...

So RRD is no longer selling the Rumba boards? could not find them listed at all...

I've reached out to get some details.. Will let you all know

Thanks Adrian.

poked around in their forums a little, but havent found any postings about it.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Sanguish - if you in the USA, you can order a board at Makerfarm.com (based in Utah). He doesnt offer all of the extras that RRD did (full wiring kits, extra thermistors, etc), but the customer service is stellar.

But then again - you may want to wait until we find out what is going on in regards to the Rumba at RRD... there has to be a  reason for them being pulled and I am curious as to what it is.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Heard back from them.

Apparently there is an issue with the Bootloader they were using, and are looking to make some changes. No word on when they will return but I'll let you know once I get an update. They pulled them because they didn't want to upset any customers with any issues.

In other news, they aren't keen on doing any new designs because there is just no money in it anymore ..which is a bit sad to hear. Gotta make money to be able to run a business though, so I do understand.

Will update further when have more details. So they aren't discontinued yet, just not available while they fix some software issues.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

Update - They will be re-listing them in about a week smile

Bumping this because its been about a month and the RUMBA is still not listed.  I have to wonder if they have reconsidered fixing it.  Hopefully the RUMBA is not history.  I was really about to order another one for my new printer build but I am seriously considering going to a smoothie board now.  Adrian, have you heard anything else.

Re: Why Rumba on SD 4 and which stepper drivers?

FWIW you can still get a Rumba from MakerFarm (based in Utah, USA) - doesnt come with all the extras that RRD had, but not a bad deal and customer service is outstanding.

but yeah, would be interested in hearing what is happening at RRD in regards to the Rumba...
