Re: XYZ PLA now available

I just received a xyzprinting natural PLA cartridge from Amazon today.  It wasn't shrink wrapped, it was missing the plug and the new center lock that keeps it together.  The filament is actually clear and the printer registers it as clear PLA.  I am unable to get it to print on my 1.0A.  I just received the printer on Friday and it is running 1.0.5 firmware.  The extruder is clicking and no filament is coming out when trying to print the pla.  The abs prints great.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Wait for the upgrade head to be available for the 1.0 if you want to stay stock. otherwise look into some of the modes listed through out this section. There are some that keep stock firmware with limited modification for a different hot end and there are some that just mod the stock hot end.

Oh and what is the first 6 digits of your serial number. There was a mix up for a while where distros where selling the 1.0 as an 1.0A not knowing there was a real difference.

Mine shows 1.0A on the screen.  The serial starts with 3S10AP

Re: XYZ PLA now available

This is pure speculation...

Did you actually get the PLA coming out of the head when you did the load filament cartridge change?

ABS won't melt at the same temps as PLA, so the temp will have to be high enough to push all of the old ABS out before running the PLA would be possible. If all the ABS wasn't gone, you'd have the extruder clicking as it tried to move the PLA but was blocked by ABS still being in the end of the extruder that wasn't melted.

For those who have used 3rd party PLA (not the formula that XYZ is using) it would at least start printing before it would swell / get sticky too much and stop in the 1.0's extruder. Even then, most claimed a little oil would be enough to make it work and finish prints. So I can't see why PLA designed for the machine wouldn't at least start printing for you.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

I'm pretty sure I had all of the abs out of the head.  I purged it until it was all clear coming out with no traces of the abs color I was using.

So it did initially extrude the PLA then? It just started clicking ehen you went to print? Could your bed be too close to the nozzle? If it is too close it can cause back pressure that will prevent extrusion and cause clicking.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

It is printing ABS just fine.  Does PLA require more space between the bed and extruder?

No, but assuming you're using different temps, you will need to adjust the bed to get the same distance between bed and nozzle.

I tried printing PLA, it loaded just fine, but clicked when I went to print. Someone else suggested lowering the bed. Does changing the temperature of the nozzle affect how high the bed is? Otherwise why else would ABS print fine and PLA click?

Re: XYZ PLA now available

Yes, changing temps will cause metal parts to contract or expand which will affect the gap between nozzle and bed.
Basically, you need to check your bed height each time you change temps and adjust if required.
The clicking is usually caused by the extruder gears not feeding the filament correctly.

The PLA is not compatible with the Da Vinci 1.0 it says on there website guys

Re: XYZ PLA now available

I have a 1.0A and am still not able to get it to print PLA.  I may lower the bed and try again tonight.

Good point! I had not even considered the extruder would be expanding. I figured printing at 10C hotter would not make that much of a difference, but I'll give it a try. Already have the shroud and kapton tape around the extruder mimicking your setup as best as possible. Maybe lowering the bed another .1 or .2mm will make the difference.

Yep you have an A.

There was a mix up for a while where distributors did not know there was a difference and where shipping 1.0 printers to people that where ordering 1.0A printers.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

Good to know.  My first one came in a box that said 1.0A right on the front.  It was dead so Amazon sent me a replacement.  The replacement printer's box only said 1.0 but luckily the printer is actually a 1.0A.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

I re-calibrated the bed again tonight and gave the PLA another go.  It is printing fine with it now.  Thanks for all of the tips guys.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

What's the temperature are you using to print PLA? I saw at another post that 190 for extruder and 43 for bed it's a good setup.

I have an other PLA material and I cannot print it. Since I have a lot of ABS colors, I supposed need to calibrate every time I need to use PLA... so boring for it! But I think Im gonna be happy if I can print using PLA just once.

45

Re: XYZ PLA now available

Maybe I'm giving up with PLA... I've tried temperature between 190 to 215. At the beginning I could start, but the extruder stops after some printing, I cannot print anymore, maybe the extruder got nozzle.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

Hi all... new to this forum and with a new printer.....

For some reason I assumed that my Davinci 1.0A came with a PLA cartridge, not the ABS, so when i ordered a roll of PLA to fill it, I was annoyed to find that it wasn't compatible!

However, with a bit of trial and error and a little fan blowing onto the head, I am printing in PLA with all the standard settings, standard XYZ software etc.

I am not having issues with the expanding and clicking since fitting the fan. I am wondering why there is such varied success rates with this, surely in my naive mind it should work for all or none??!

Anyhow, nice to have joined the forum...

Simply because it also depends a lot on what you are printing. Probably you'll find your extruder clicking sooner rather than later.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

I was in the same boat.  I have a 1.0A and did several successful builds with PLA.  I ran into the "clicking"/no-extrusion in the middle of print as well.  I unloaded the filament and reloaded.  Started another print.  Started fine, but, halfway through, same issue.  I loaded some ABS, perfect print.  I think I could play with the print-bed and work it out, but it's not worth the time or the uncertainty during long builds.  I'll chalk it up to caveat emptor and just stick with what I know works.

I suspect that XYZ's 1.0A just isn't sophisticated enough to handle multiple materials without some serious mods that are way beyond my skillset.

Have a look at the mod I use here ..... http://www.soliforum.com/topic/9643/bro … ci/page/2/
You'd be surprised how good the stock extruder can be with a few small and simple mods.

Re: XYZ PLA now available

This is what I don't understand. I have a brand new 2.0 with an upgraded extruder from XYZ. I can load the PLA XYZ cart. But the XYZ software won't let me print with it. It keeps saying it is the wrong filament. I really don't want to flash because it new and under warranty. Anyone has any ideas?
