Topic: upgrade to E3D V6

I hope to upgrade to the E3Dv6, on my Solidoodle 3, in the near future.

What are some things I will need to know, and what parts should I print before I begin?
(just this? thingiverse.com/thing:111213)

Is there a parts breakdown of the hotend for the SD3?

Should I go Bowden?

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

This would be the extruder you would need.
Lawsy's design is great for the PEEK and E3D v5 hotends, but the v6 has a different size.

There is one user who just went Bowden with his v6 and he posted fairly recently...unfortunately I can't dig for it at the moment. Just use the search feature.

Both are secure!  The reality is that Lawsy's original MK-5 never fit the V5 correctly as E3d uses a larger groove mount than that of the standard J-mount's.  Not just for the V5 but the V6 as well.  If you are dealing with the bulldog extruder and aluminum mounts than yes there is a .5mm difference.  For this mount it won't matter.
Hope this clarifies things smile

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

I have finally given in I just ordered an E3D V6 !!   Anything I need to know   Is it a direct swap firmware wise ? I have a SD3 with the stock hot end .

I am going to print the mounts  Azerate and Wardjr  linked to.

I think it is the same thermistor    100K

Any help would be great.

SD3, RAMPS 1.4, Lawsy's carriages modified by me, 2 SSRs, E3D V6, 2 Power supplies, Independent monitoring of both power supplies (amps and volts) also extruder and bed temps, Blue Tooth connectivity, bearings in all axis & rotational points, Y axis direct drive.  Remotely controlled power box on / off . Re: upgrade to E3D V6

new question. looking at starting this project, and its been mentioned that I will need to get new guide rods?

soliforum.com/topic/9141/lawsy-carriages-questions

is this the case? or can they be salvaged at all?

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

If you have the SD3, you can use the stock everything but the extruder if you would prefer. smile

SD shafts are of poor tolerance. Grabbing some would be beneficial, but not necessary if you already run ok. If you needed new rods for any reason, you want to do the carriage upgrade while you are at it. But in relation to the hotend upgrade, this will not be necessary unless you have the 4 (due to the different design for the X carriage)

Nope, you need to update the firmware. Covered on here many, many times. Check the wiki.

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

I just placed my order for the E3D V6. I have an SD2 and I am tired of the original hot end plugging on me. This should be the ticket.

Thanks Tim!

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

Do I need different hardware to get the MK-5 assembled? or can I use what is already present?

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

I started my E3D install last night. I am installing on a stock SD2 and replacing the standard acrylic extruder with the MK5. So far, the only gotcha I have is that it needs an additional M3X10 screws that are not on the original extruder. This is noted in the Wiki which I didn't read until the parts arrived. I am about half way done and it is looking good. Thanks for the documentation, it has helped a lot. Here are a few pictures of the steps up to the uninstall. Will add more of the new hot end tonight. https://plus.google.com/u/0/10819999415 … 6450956001

So you have one of these which has 9 M3x10's

And you want to upgrade to one of these which uses at most 6 M3x10's.

I would be curious to know where the others are going to go.

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

I installed my E3D last night . Boy does it look good !  It heats much faster than original . And I really liked the gummy bears !
I think I read somewhere (but can't seem to find it again) that I should bump the temp up to about 230 C for ABS ? Is this correct?   Lawsy's mount fit like a glove . Thanks to Azerate and Elmoret and Wardjr for all of your assistance. Fan wiring is only temporary.

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

230 to 245 it kinda depends on the speeds you want to run and the particular filament.
Looks good is that arrow so you can see the motor turn?  I like it.

I would be curious to know where the others are going to go.

Just looking at your new mount (The bottom picture) I can spot a bolt that does not match the others. (Upper left corner) that did not come from the old mount. I quote this from the Soliwiki for the E3D " To install the MK4 you don't need any additional hardware, though the MK5 appears to need 2 M3x10mm long screws." The upper left corner needs to be shorter than the ones on the original acrylic head.

By the way, I checked out the wiki for assembling the jigsaw from Solidoodle and it included a parts list.

QTY Hardware
3 M3x20 SCK
5 M3x22 SCK
1 M3x30 SCK
2 M3x14 HEX
1 M5x15 SCK
1 M5 Large washer
4 M5 Small Washer
2 M3 Small Washer
4 M3 Lock nuts
1 Spring
1 Thumb nut

No M3X10 screws in it. The upper left corner of the new MK5 mount needs an M3X10. This is why the wiki stated that.

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

Thanks Wardjr ,   Yes that is an indicator I drew up in TinkerCad  back in July I posted it on Thingiverse . Here is the link
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:255331
Also if you double the size of it you can add it to the "Z" shaft at the bottom to show how it moves , that is what I do.

Thanks for your help and input in the past. My next upgrade is to install the Ramps 1.4 board sitting here on my bench with the Blue Tooth connection I will post it in a couple of weeks .

You are talking about the filament guide?  Yes that is a shorter screw on that printer but I have used the longer 20mm bolts on many others.  But it depends on the length of the screw coming in from the back of the motor as those holes go all the way through the motor.  So you may have to flip corners on the heatsink and fan.  It just depends what 2 corners SD used when they assembled it.
I am not saying you are wrong as you are in fact correct!  But it can be done without that one extra M3X10.  I still don't know where the other would need to go.

As far as the other bolts, my assembly is just like yours so far. No issues so far. Thanks for your input.

Yep mostly curious as this has come up a couple of times.  I was just looking to tweak the WIKI slightly.  It just kinda seems to depend on who assembled your SD3 and if it was a Friday machine wink

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

Finished my upgrade. I believe they intend the other 10mm to go in the side for the end stop. Mine is an original sd2 and I found a standard motherboard screw M3x5 worked well in the filament guide and I didn't need the screw in the side, my end stop functioned properly without it. I got everything finished up and all the wiring neatened up this morning. Now I am working on a filament guide to improve the feed. Thanks for the comments, it helped me out.

Re: upgrade to E3D V6

Nice.  I am doing the same upgrade this evening on a SD2.  It appears that you have the same parts as me except that I seem to have this one little part that doesn't look like it goes anywhere.  It almost looks like it would go on the fron of the extruder to hold it in place but there is no place for it in the main body.
