Topic: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

I am wondering if anyone has copied the new SD4 extruder and made it available as an STL yet?  I know it is a common design that other printers have used too but I have yet to find it on thingiverse or elsewhere.  I got rid of the acrylic a while ago and I like the design of the MK5 extruder but I can't seem to get the last tiny bit of wobble out of my hot end.  I am convinced it is moving just a little bit, especially around sharp 90 degree corners.

Looking on solidoodle's website, it looks like the new design secures the hot end with a screw that puts pressure on the top of the hot end to prevent movement.  I'm thinking that if you make this out of ABS plastic and you will probably only get a single use (or maybe a few uses) out of it before the screw sufficiently strip the plastic if you are threading it into the plastic.  This might not be a fatal flaw because its easy to throw 6 of these things on the printer to have a bunch of spares.

A mod that uses a through hole with two bolts and nuts to secure the hot end would be best, but I realize there is very limited real estate to work with here.  Here is one version on thingiverse that does use bolts to hold it on, but it's not a thru bolt and nut.  Also, if you are using the Lawsy carriages, you will have to do down into the comments and download the tinker cad version that he linked to unless you want to buy (good luck finding) longer bolts to secure it to the carriage from behind.  I do really like the tip on this version that does up very close to the gear so that there is no gap between the hot end and the extruder gear.

Any other thoughts on getting the ultimate, wobble proof hot end holder?

Boz's Rev A and B designs are incredibly secure. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:271506 -this is his latest model. I printed a couple Rev A extruders and just never installed them. The stock 4-40 bolts on your X carriage will either have to be cut to size, or order some from McMaster-Carr. And yes, they do have them smile

I had some wobbling issues with my MK5 at first. But after some tinkering, I isolated 90% of my problem to be the rear teflon block loosening. The other 10% was properly tightening the 4-40 bolts.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

That does look like a pretty sweet design.  I am actually still using the stock hot end.  I know, shame on me.  Not to get off topic, but I really haven't had any problems with it.  But everyone loves their E3D's so it is on my list to do.  The stock hot end didn't do to well the time I attempted to print T-glase, though.

It looks like that is for the E3D V5, right?  I would have liked to pick up the V6, which probably won't fit because I read they have a different overall length, but if I can't find a super secure holder I will order a V5 instead.

I'm still interested in a printable version of the new SD3 hot end holder, though.

Edit: the 4-40 bolts are the long ones that secure the hot end mount with extruder motor to the carriage body right?  I have wanted to find a super long version of those so that I can thread it all the way thru the lawsy X-carriage and out the back to put a nut on it, but I have had no luck on McMaster.  Everything at home depot is also too thick or not long enough.  Any suggestions?

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

If you are having success with the stock hotend then you are one of the lucky few. smile
When I finished my E3D upgrade, I was blown away. Just for the all metal construction and location of the thermistor are reasons enough. I cleared 3 clogs in one day with my stock, and only had one clog with my E3D. Cleared it and never had another problem.
You are correct that v6 is shorter, so this design would not work unless you are good with Sketchup, convinced Boz to reowrk his design, or openly asked someone here if they would be willing to do so. I have the v5 and aside from the thermistor "anchor" design, I see no need to pick one up at this time. v5 works just fine.

I am actually tossing the last belt on right now as I finish the carriage upgrade. When you print the center top, the top (flat face) has two cavities. This is where you can drop in a M3 or 4-40 nut. The screw does not *have to* go all the way to the back like with the stock SD carriage. Since I couldn't find any M3 screws long enough, I found some 4-40s that went just a few hairs past the nut and into the other side a bit...this is already sturdier than the stock.

wardjr designed an MK5 for the v6 E3D...to my knowledge, it is the only SD extruder body that accepts the v6.

.

That's right, I remember now.  My first attempt at assembling the carriages, I used the nuts there but when I went to take it apart for some reason, the nuts just spun and I ended up having to do a lot more disassembly.  So now I just threaded the screws.  A drop or two of super glue in with those nuts would prevent spinning.  I'm still going to keep an eye open for longer versions.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

I just buy the 2 parts from solidoodle. Nice Aluminium parts for a very good price.
I grind up the Aluminium heat sink to fit it. Still working on the mounting part but i'm lazy so it's a slow process smile

Here is the pictures of the assembly so far.

is that a genuine E3D? It looks cast.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

Nope, just some cheap $45 shipped ebay aluminium extruder.
Bought one and it work like a champs, so i get the second one for this mod.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

Printrbot makes a very nice alu extruder that should fit our Solidoodles with minimum modifications.
http://printrbot.com/shop/printrbot-alu-extruder/

One of the nice things about this, is that, it has adjustable sprint tension, which most designs of this type don't.  It mounts to the carriage from the underside, and although it was designed primarily for a Ubis Hot end, it will also fit the standard Solidoodle hot end, and any other hot end that is 16mm in diameter.

It also has one nice touch, a filament guide built in just under the drive gear.  I works really well on my Printrbot Simple.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

Very nice looking Pirvan.

I have no try mine yet but do worry about the spring tension. And wish there are a way to adjust it.

I'm mounting mine on the 0.9 degree motor so it a bit longer than the original so u have to mount the fan on the side.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

Very nice work Pirvan, it seems to be everything you could want in an extruder mount!  Simple to assemble, guide piece beneath the gear, and holds the hot end firmly.  Awesome.

Have you shared the .stl on thingiverse?  I took a quick look and couldn't find it.  If not, are you willing to post it here?  Also, if you post the .skp file (if you used sketchup), I will try to make any changes needed to get it to accept the E3D V6, if changes are even needed.

Thanks!

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

The difference between v5 and v6 seems to be about 2.15mm
So the body will need to be reworked if there is not already that much of a gap between the bottm of the extruder body and the top of the heat sink.

Which one are you referring to?  The aluminum one or the blue one?  The Aluminum one is from Printrbot, you can buy it through the link I posted.

If you're looking for the blue one, I posted a version of it before, with a different tensioning bearing setup.  I can certainly post the STL for this version, but I don't have a Sketch up file, I work in Solidworks.

It's not just the extruder part though, it's a complete replacement for the Extruder assembly and carriage.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

I took a brief look thru your post history and did not see it, so if you could post the .stl for the blue one, that would be awesome.  I'm on the hunt for a very firm holding E3D V6 mount.  It doesn't sound like this will fit but I might give it a try and see if I can sand it to fit or something.  Thanks.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

See this, how easy to modify the extruder and hot end, don't need any printed parts,
You will be able to assemble a Solidoole new extruder and hot end to your SD 2 or SD 3.

--------------------------------------------------------

It is possible to use the SD4 extruder parts on the SD2. Two mods needed to be done for this to work. The bridge piece needs to be extended 2.2mm and a plate needs to be made to mate with the two long bolts under the extruder to the two holes in the stepper.
The plate in the image below was temporary. I've since created and cut out a nicer looking one.

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

For the details, refer "Hacks & Mods"---"Acrylic extruder upgrade to aluminum"
From Macgyverx, I think you even don't need to make a new bridge, just make
A 2 mm thick alum. or printed plate with 4 holes( two for long screw mounting,
Two for mounting to motor). How simple it is!

Re: Has anyone copied the new SD4 extruder yet?

Yup, that where i got the idea from, he kind of prove that it work, i just follow through.

But instead of adding an aluminum plate, i printed a base the base that i mounted the motor too.
I have Lawsy carriage replacements so needed something different.
It is very simple like you said.
