Topic: Solidoodle 3 - Nozzle upgrade options

Has anyone upgraded the nozzle on their Solidoodle? What do I need to look for in a new nozzle, how can I tell what will be compatible with my Solidoodle 3?

I've broken my nozzle and need to order a new one. I was thinking about trying to upgrade, I would like a nozzle that can print at 270 C if possible.

Re: Solidoodle 3 - Nozzle upgrade options

Lots of users have upgraded to all metal hot ends.  My favorite is the E3d as there is a lot of support here on the forum about how to flash the firmware to allow those higher temps.  Take a look at the filastruder site elmoret is a user here on the forum and has provided excellent service.

+1 on the E3D, i've been running a v5 for some time now and it's very accurate and reliable.

Note that it's not quite a drop-in replacement though (it's unlikely anything would be) - read around a bit on how to install it, the replacement extruder required and firmware updates for your board. Don't be afraid though, there's nothing involved that some patience and a tinkerer's mind won't solve. smile

I've heard great things about it elsewhere, so I've ordered a V6. Thanks for the recommendations!

In the mean time you are going to want to get your hands on a modified MK-5 mount for the v6.  Ask around someone will print one up and send it to you.
Here is the file for it.

The E3D does improve your quality but can cause some issues if you are wiring incompetent like I am haha. But there is a good community here that will get you though any bumps in the road should you have any.

A suggestion, I don't know how much you print but also consider getting different size nozzles, the bigger nozzles give faster printing time but the lines are more visible on the top solid layers and the smaller ones are the opposite.

wardjr,  thanks for the link, I was just coming back to this thread to look for suggestions on mounting! I'll have to send that STL to my local hackerspace to get a print.

Nico_hk, great idea. I'll probably look into multiple nozzle sizes once I'm up and running.

Hi again, I got this part printed, and have a few questions.

I've tried searching and haven't found where this came from. The closest I found was a thread titled "mk5-extruder-new-and-improved" on this forum (the forums won't let me post a link)
Is there a write-up on installing this? I just don't want to make a mistake and destroy things. It looks like I should take apart some of the existing acrylic to fit this. This, and the pictures in that other thread, make me wonder if I need a couple more parts printed?

Re: Solidoodle 3 - Nozzle upgrade options

The definitive guide for E3D assembly is here: http://www.soliwiki.com/E3D_extruder
Lawsy's mk 5 thread is, as you've found, the guide for installing the extruder parts: http://www.soliforum.com/topic/3016/mk5 … -improved/
You'll need printed at least:
* the hotend mount
* the filament guide
* the locking arm. (EDIT: not required. see wardjr's post below)
You can re-use the acrylic tension arm, or alternatively print the matching replacement.
You should be able to reassemble it with a selection of the original bolts as per lawsy's thread.

As far as the WIKI goes that is the place to start.
When it comes to the MK-5 The file I posted above for the V6 E3d will only additionally require (from lawsy) the filament guide
and then tension arm if you don't want to reuse the acrylic tension arm.  The locking arm is not required.
