I heard after a few layers of printing it's ok to turn the print bed down/ off with ABS filament. has anyone tried this how many layers to you think it should print before turning the heat down. I am having some curling issues.

If by curling you are referring to parts of the print lifting off the bed than reducing heat will only aggravate the situation. If you are referring to areas of your print (corners) rising up so the nozzle drags across it than bed heat isn't the cause. For that you need to reduce the speed to give the plastic more time to cool before the next layer goes down.

Missinformation is apparently rampant when it come to 3D printing. I agree with wardjr, reducing the heat will only aggravate the situation...
What temp do you have your bed set at?

Actually it was not on the forums but at the 3D printing expo in NYC. The theory is that once I think 10 layers are printed the object is already stuck to the bed. I do know after the bed is cooled the model still needs to be pried from the bed. I am going to experiment this weekend and will post the results.

I think most of us are using that with glass to our advantage

That's the true scientific method, and it's best used when one can prove a fact to oneself.
My thought was turn it down to 50 and see what happens. I don't have a glass bed I have the tape bed. If I get class do I have to take the tape off. I was think a peice of 1/8" glass any thoughts
Leave the tape go have a cheap piece of glass not even 1/8 and spray the underside with aqua net and stick it to the bed. A couple of heat/cool cycles and it won't move unless you want to remove it. Set up correctly this will be your most cost effective mod.

Thanks. I still use hairspray on the glass tight?
Yep, a good thick coat on the bottom of the glass will stick it to the bed after a couple heat/cool cycles and a light mist on the top will help your prints stick
I have gotten some good results from this method using PLA, but only in trials for prototypes.
After about 15-20 layers, I shut the bed off and worked great....but I still used wardjr's methods. 
For ABS, don't skimp on the heat!
