Topic: Who knew??? Canola oil, better then lithium grease!
I had a project that I needed some lithium grease for, but had none on hand, so I googled plastic safe lubricants. Apparently canola oil is a plastic safe lubricant, at least I am 95 % sure it is. I had it on hand, and the huge unseen benefits besides infinite supply always available in my home... it allows for much thinner/lower viscosity coating of your bearing surfaces. Essentially translates to making my parts move more freely then using lithium grease, and not as messy(at least for me.)
Anyhow I was regreasing my SD3 XY carriage rods today, and it made them even smoother then my standard grease I use.
I'd suggest canola oil is the superior lubricant for the carriage rods compared to lithium or other plastic safe greases. I still wouldn't use it on my 5/16 threaded Z rod. don't really want to have oil dripping into my stepper... although probably wouldn't hurt a darn thing. But still...
Anyhow just wanted to share the find, here is an article about using it as an alternative for expensive paper shredder oil (didn't know there was such a thing as paper shredder oil, turns out it's just re-bottled canola oil). A wonderful oil we cook, and can apparently grease our toys with.
