Topic: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

I'm asking, not telling.

I need a longer 3MM Z-stop screw obviously, got the wiring all done (soldered) and wrapped in Kapton. Are there any software/firmware/hardware changes I should know about? I know there has been quite a bit of back and forth since this hot end came out, I guess I'm hoping to get a summary. If it already exists, I can't find it.

Thanks, folks.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

In firmware, you will need to change the thermister from type 6 to type 1 (or the other way around, I forget).  You will also need to change the max temp (might as well change the default temp while you are at it).

I have found no other "real" issues using the E3D.  The major problem I have right now is that the Mk5/E3D combination has no useful dial gauge mount for leveling the bed.  I am still in search of a workable solution to that one.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Maybe you could make a flat plate that has a mount for the indicator which replaces the E3D fan and uses its holes .

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

And... remember I'm the lowest common denominator (a noob), where/how do I make firmware changes? I know I can set the default temp in Repetier Host but that ain't the same thing.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

heartlander... I posted a universal dial indicator mount in the MK5 Accessories a while back. It will work for any of the Jigsaw Replacements.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

In my humble, and usually wrong, opinion, there should be a sticky for each of the major mods with a more or less complete blurb of the stuff you need to accomplish the mod.

Most of you guys are familiar with the landscape and it is a pain, I know, to have to repeat everything slooooowly for the noobs, but hey, we need noobs. They're so fun to watch. Like the guy that actually posted a pipe cleaner (!) as a mod. Can you believe that guy? And, he didn't even have the good taste to post a You Tube procedural video showing how to bend the pipe cleaner! What, does he just assume we all have that level of experience that we just KNOW how to bend a friggin pipe cleaner? It could have been better. That's all I'm sayin.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

My wife asked me what I was doing a while ago. I told her and she said, "You know, Kent, these guys are really f@#$%ing you around, you know that? They actually have you convinced that what type of hair spray you use can affect whether you get good parts out of your printer thingy."

I'll never live down the look of disgust and dismay in her eyes.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

When I made my changes I followed this:

http://www.soliwiki.com/Updating_Solidoodle_Firmware

Once you have that all setup and you have opened the Marlin firmware, find EXTRUDER_0_MAXTEMP and change it to what you want.  I set mine to 320 as you have to go to at least 300 to tighten the nozzle (and I wanted a bit of room above that).  Also change TEMP_SENSOR_0 to 1 (it will be 6).  Then upload it to the printer according to the instructions in the above link.

That should do it for you.  If you can't do it, try to find someone close by who can walk you through it in person.

I don't think anyone is f'ing with you.  I use White Rain hairspray but am going to try Aqua Net to see if it works better.  I asked my wife to get some Aqua Net when she went to the store last.  She said, "Just use what I have in the bathroom."  Women just don't understand.:(

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

You can get some Pantene Pro-V Medium-Thick hairspray and do a demo for her.  I used some my wife had when I ran out of aquanet, and it removed any ability my plate had to stick prints.  I couldn't print anything else until I went out and bought more Aquanet.   The Pantene doesn't have "VA/CROTONATES/VINYL NEODECANOATE COPOLYMER" so maybe that is the difference.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Yeah, the hair spray thing was a joke (I use Suave Max Hold, which has similar ingredients plus Vitamin E, to prevent my printer from getting cancer from all the hair spray).

Anyway, I looked over flashing the firmware (sounds kinda perverted, actually!) and my first reaction is: Dang! Shame there isn't a zip file with the modified files all in it for lazy butts like me, or to reduce probabilities of induced fat finger errors.

But, I do appreciate you taking time to point me forward. I can work through it.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

I didn't know that brand mattered.  My only solidoodle mod consists of a bathroom tile binder clipped on and then some dollar store hairspray of some unknown brand.  The prints stick so well that I managed to lift the whole printer off of the ground when I did a 1" circle calibration print.

What's special about aquanet?

14

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

I use aquanet super hold. but I have not heard a particular brand matters.

15

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

I shopped for which was at the dollar store and didn't smell.  Working out so far!  How much is aquanet?

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Sanjay from E3D here. I don't have a solidoodle, so can't really help you on the retrofitting front, but if you have any questions you think I can answer, then fire away!

I search these forums for "E3D" here and there, and this thread made me laugh so hard, the hairspray commentary really resonates with me too!

In the UK I have found the best hairspray for printing to be the stuff from Boots in the greenish can. Many other generic sprays work well too, Wilkinsons cheapest stuff is good.

You are looking for "Acrylic Co-Polymer" in your hairspray, at least that's what is written on them in the UK. All sprays with that stuff in them and not much fragrance or other fancy features seem to work very well.

I Design/Sell the E3D all-metal hotends. My company is called e3d-online - you can buy at www.e3d-online.com

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Also I suspect you may need to avoid the pump bottles and stick with aerosol cans.  That was the other main difference with the brand that didn't work for me.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

I am up to my neck in the firmware upgrades now. How/where do I find out which ATMega chip I have (SD3)?

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Wow, that E3D heats up FAST. 200C in about two minutes.

I assume you figured out which chip you have, if not look on the chip itself or just try all of them until one works.

Yes, that is another thing I like about the E3D, it heats up really fast.  If only they made a heated bed like that, lol.

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Yes, like a dumb ass I was expecting a chip that literally read "AT1286". Anyway, I found it. Thanks, pal.

They do - its called a PCB MkIIa or a QU-BD Silicone bed - both of which are at temp in 5 minutes. Obviously it takes *slightly* longer than the nozzle, as there is about 100 times the surface area to heat.

And the reason E3D's heat faster is  because they use a heater cartridge thats 40W.. compared to the 5-6W of a 'resistor' heater... J-Heads with a cartridge heat just as fast as does the 'stock' nozzle if you replace the resistor with a cartridge..

Re: To sum up, key things to know about the E3D modification

Looking good... The Mk5 uses the stock bolts, also it does not require the extender that you mention and E3D includes enough Kapton tape to do the job.
Thanks for doing the write up it looks like you have more time into it than it takes to actually install the E3D.
