Topic: Question about slicer and dual core processors with windows xp

I have a windows xp Pro machine with an athlon 64 x2 3800+. I've tried using the latest version of repetier and the official solidoodle one. When I slice with either software it maxes out one processor while leaving the other processor idle. I have a ubuntu machine that uses a slightly faster processor (a 4400+) and it uses both cores by default. Is there any way to make windows xp do this as well? Using both cores results in a MUCH faster slice.

One thing you can check is the process affinity (to make sure both cores are available to the app).

There is a setting to create more threads in slicer,

Slic3r->configure->print Settings tab->advance , and "threads"

not sure if it will benefit from duo core...  you should give it a try

"1kg should last for an while" is a lie!

I tried the threads and that seemed to have stepped it up a bit. It still acts strange though, when I slice it seems to hit 50% cpu utilization and it doesn't go any higher. It's slicer much faster now though so maybe I should another thread or two and see if that helps. Thanks for sending me down the right path.

Re: Question about slicer and dual core processors with windows xp

Thread seems to mostly effect RAM usage for me.

In the past, on this x200 lenovo, repetier/slic3r was very bad at utilizing my computer resources. Slices that people reported take minutes would take me at least 30 minutes.  Some slices took me 5+ hours.  I don't know if this was the programs or windows. About five months ago it started utilizing my resources correctly, either an update with repetier or windows, and I'm back in the regular ballpark of slicing (but a bit slower since this is a laptop.)

Good luck? My response was not particularly helpful just giving you my experience
