Topic: Glass with kapton tape

Anyone try it yet?

I may give it ago since I haven't had success using hair spray.

My hair spray appears to lift after 10 to 20 mins and you can see strings of
hair spray. I apply a light coat but just doesn't hold.

I've tried 2 different hair sprays none have worked and I've tried
tests with various thicknesses of layers and still nothing.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

Glass with kapton, no

But glass with blue painters tape, yes

My problem with painters tape is that when you have a thin flat print it can be very difficult to remove it, especially without damaging the tape.

But painters tape is much cheaper than kapton, you might try that first.

P.S.  This is with PLA; nice thing is you don't need to heat the bed with PLA and painters tape.

Some resources to consider.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

Did you try to apply one coat, let it dry and then apply another coat of hairspray and let it dry on the heated bed?
I've noticed one coat is not enough. I'm using the cheapest hairspray I could find, everybody says Aquanet is the best but I'm afraid it's sold only in the Unied States...

Re: Glass with kapton tape

I use aquanet but I haven't had great results.
I apply my first coat at 60°c. I don't usually add a second but I when I did
I applied the second coat at 80°c and it still didn't stick.

What temperature do you apply your coats?

I also keep my bed at 110°c and print at 197°c to 200°c on the extruder.

I put mine on at temp just before a print.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

Do you apply multiple coats or just one?
Also what settings do you run your bed and nozzle?

Your prints always look amazing!
Big fan of your work

Re: Glass with kapton tape

I only do one coat but that is because I have a good base on there already. There is no fixed firm method to spraying the bed. I kinda just dust the area I am going to print it. Sorta like I am spraying air freshener but with a target in mind.

My bed I always have at 100C but my extruder temp varies depending on the filament. This natural filament that I am running now seems to flow really well at 215 but I have some dark colors that don't work at anything less than 225-230. I am also running a different hotend so my temps don't translate too well.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

I recently went with kapton on glass and it works much better than the glass and hairspray I was using. I still do hit it with hairspray occasionally, though.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

I've actually been using kapton on glass exclusively for months and loving it.

When I originally got my glass bed, I didn't have any hairspray yet and put some kapton on it just to print and use up the roll.  I didn't expect to see any difference, but I guess with the flatter, smoother, bed, I found that the kapton sticks much better, doesn't pull away from the bed, and prints pop right off when done.  I never got around to trying the hairspray, but since kapton works perfectly well, why bother?

Re: Glass with kapton tape

The brand of hairspray can make a big difference.  If you are in Canada, I can tell you that Pantene holds about as well as no spray at all.  Garnier Fructis works like a dream for me.  Where are you?  Maybe someone local can recommend a good brand.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

I'm currently using aquanet which seems to be the popular choice in the us for 3d printing.
However just doesn't stick for me.
I see little fibers after about 30 mins of printing when the print starts to peel.

I ordered some kapton tape so I will give this a shot once I get it in.

Right now I'm forced to use abs juice which is messy and leaves a terrible bottom.

Re: Glass with kapton tape

Also 110 C sounds to hot. I am wondering if that isn't causing issues.  I always print at 95 C.  I use glass and hairspray with no problem.

Here is the ingredient list on my hairspray. It's the cheapest  I can buy.

Ingredients:

  • Water

  • Alcohol Denat

  • Acrylates/Hydroxyesters Acrylates

  • Copolymer

  • Aminomethy Propanol

  • Panthenol

  • Fragrance

Hope that helps

I use glass and hairspray at 110c, I guess it's only 90-100C at the actual glass. Works very well for me! The rest of your post is spot on, but I'm just reporting that I don't have issues with that setting.
