Topic: J-head Upgrade

So I upgraded to a J-head and am loving it but I do have one concern. Going to add a print cooling fan to my machine and the hotend is no insulated like the Solidoodle hot end.  Anyone know what kind of tape they wrapped the ceramic insulator with?  I would rather not use kapton because it is kind of ugly.

Re: J-head Upgrade

I believe it's the same as Makergear's 1/2" rubber coated fiberglass, here (select it in the drop down list, $2.50 for 4" length).

Re: J-head Upgrade

Where did you get it? And could you please tell me the overall height from top to bottom? I'm making my extruder compatible with both Solidoodle and J-head hot ends. I'm taking a survey of J-head heights in order to make sure my fan mount is the right height, as it's driven by the overall height of the hot end.

Thanks nlancaster!

Re: J-head Upgrade

With a bit of stretching, I managed to fit my Solidoodle insulating wrap around the J-Head, even with extra Kapton tape around the heater.

I used some High temp heat shrink and ceramic insulation. Fiber glass insulation would work also. I think the original solidoodle is just fiberglass mating covered by 125C heat shrink tubing.

Re: J-head Upgrade

My j-head is 7 mm shorter than stock (I got my machine in December) Solidoodle. It fits more snuggly in the MK4 as well.
I do want a different fan because Lawsy's fan is too low now. sad
