Topic: New LCD

Panucatt's new LCD is up on Kickstarter.  It works with the Azteegs, RAMPS and Sanguinololus,  It also seems to take fewer pins, so you might be able to use it along with a gcode controlled fan.

Re: New LCD

Hey Ian,

So if i understand correctly, you're saying Panucatt's $75 LCD would work on a stock Solidoodle 2?

Cuz that looks pretty sweet!

Re: New LCD

Pretty nice. I backed it, even with a panelolu sitting here,  maybe ill save the panelolu for another printer haha

Re: New LCD

Yep same for me. I already have the panelolu kit here, just need to build it. But I like the less wires and support for the Azteegs board as well that I am looking to upgrade to.

Re: New LCD

Would this be any easier to install than the panelolu?

Re: New LCD

Very interesting, I've now backed it too.

I was just looking at the specs for the Sanguino/644p and noticed it had i2c pins as well as TX/RX serial pins and pondered why the Panelolu consumed all of the pins on the header, and I started to think about something similar to viki. As I have teensy (like a smaller arduino) and a graphical LCD kicking around to make my own control box/display.

Looks like the viki LCD uses the PWM pin for optional brightness control of the back light. So you can keep your G-Code fan.

Re: New LCD

So for newbs with the SD2.... If we want this LCD, should we back this kickstarter at the $75 or $85 level?

Re: New LCD

The $85 level I think.  The SD2 ships with the 644P which is isn't up to running an LCD.  The Panelolu LCD kit required the same upgrade.

Re: New LCD

Thanks Ian for your advice.

Re: New LCD

So would this add an SD slot to the SD2?

12

Re: New LCD

Yes itll add sd capability. This is just a better option over panelolu if you want to keep pins open or plan to upgrade to ramps or asteeg (spelling wrong for sure)

Re: New LCD

I backed it yesterday.
Looking forward to the upgrade!

backed.

Re: New LCD

Interestingly enough.  I think soliforum alone might have been able to fund this project.  Glad a few jumped on board, and obvious thanks to Ian for the mention  I haven't been browsing kickstarter as religiously has I have in the past

Re: New LCD

I talked to Roy about this and he said it would be possible to ship the chips with solidoodle firmware on them.  If we get a bunch like that im sure he wouldnt mind setting them up so they are truly drop in chips.

Re: New LCD

That would be very nice indeed.

Re: New LCD

That'd be beyond great. Please let him know that there is interest from Solidoodlers in that.
Do we need to notif him via kickstarter?

Re: New LCD

Maybe Lawsy can get the relevant code from whatever Marlin branch currently supports it and paste it to the Solidoodle version.

Re: New LCD

About an hour to go before Viki LCD kickstarter is done.  They just posted an update here.

Re: New LCD

When responding to the viki lcd survey question about ATMEGA1284P Micro controller chip packaging, which option should I choose? Through Hole (40 pin DIP) or Surface Mount ( 44 TQFP)?

Re: New LCD

Hardly in the spirit of supportting this kick starter.

but having just gotten a rasberry pi for christmas, I can't help but feel that a better solution is the $35 dollar Rpi with a $40 old PS1 or game cube travel screen for feedback that's the same price. as this LCD mod.

Re: New LCD

Wether you support it or not,  viki lcd is a clean new setup worth everyone's time here at soliforum.

Re: New LCD

I received my Viki today.  Very nice, but now I need to design a back and mounting solution for it, and track down the Marlin branch that supports it.  I expect Viki parts will start showing up on Thingiverse in the next week or so.

I can't think of an ideal place to put it on the SD.  The top isn't great, because I'm always opening it up to deal with filament, and hanging off the side is awkward.  In front get in the way of the door.  Seems like best would be to have the printer raised on a stand or box, with the Viki in front below the door.  It would have been nice if the printer had been designed that way so the power supply and electronics could be hidden underneath rather than hanging off the back.
