The diameter test is a required part of printer calibration regardless of the filament cost. The diameter controls the feed rate when it is put into the slicer software.
Getting this wrong is where many make a mistake and as a result they get over or under extrusion. This has to be done with each and every roll.
This should be considered one of your more important calibration steps as it directly impacts print quality.
I do calibrate my feed rate experimentally for new filament, I just don't bother the measure the diameter. I only care if it is right diameter as long as it print out right. The diameter of filament difference does not directly translate to feed rate change, so I just calibrate my feed rate.
