Topic: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

I recently upgraded my SD4 to use the E3d v6 hotend and the MK5 jigsaw. During the upgrade I noticed everything is mounted using a zip tie (pictured). Has anyone used a different method? My zip tie has stretched and there is quite a bit of wiggle. I would like to upgrade to something a little more secure at the same time instead of just replacing the zip tie.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

That zip tie should be acting as strain relief for your wires.  And although it will remove some wobble from the motor, that isn't its primary function.  If you use some other means to hold all the wires then you can eliminate the zip tie.  The problem is, a zip tie is a rather simple and effective means to get the job done.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

what wardjr said... the wires need to be secured to prevent problems.
zipties are cheap and easy - and even come in colors, lol wink

if it is loose, you should be able to grab the end with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it a little tighter

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

Well you should do a Bowden upgrade if you want to prevent less stress on your harness and to have a lighter carriage buy using the SD4 aluminum frame.

Print this mount from thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:738178

then get this bowden mount: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3Dprinter-MK8-1 … cow_6ahvtg

Move your extruder motor to the rear of you printer.

I used extened M3 screws and bols along with washers for everything.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

Sorry, but a bowden setup will have zero bearing on harness stress for the hotend - the wiring for that still needs to be supported.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

My real issue that I thought was the zip ties is actually the full carriage is lose. So it is possible for the extruder tip to get shifted. This causes a shelf in the print where the rest of the print is now offset. I pulled apart my extruder and tried to figure out how everything is attached to the carriage but the only thing I could find was 2 nuts just above the rails (no idea how to get to those to tighten them) I can take pictures/ video tonight to show a little better what I'm talking about

Here is an example of what one of my prints would look like when the extruder is shifted.

Heartless and I were having a conversation about that through PMs. She mentioned I need to go to hardened rods before moving to that setup. I'll start printing the lawsy carriages and pick up some new rods and see how that all goes. thanks! smile

And she would never take it that way so no worries.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

No, I wouldn't take offence. wink it is hard to tell on a forum like this, LOL (and it happens all the time)

assuming you have the stock carriages, there is a teflon block that can be adjusted on the rear rod - it should be snug against the rod, but not so tight it hinders movement

(there is also one of these teflon blocks on the right hand Y carriage)

I took a look at that block and I'm not sure that is where my wiggle is coming from. Attached is a video of what is moving. The extruder motor and everything attached to it is moving on top of the part connected to the rails.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

ok, that sounds like a mounting screw may be stripped out then... (the video is not working for me, sorry)

there are 3 screws that hold the aluminum bracket to the plastic parts, 2 in the front and one in back. to get to them you would have to remove the stepper motor... sad  if you are going to go to all that trouble, you may as well do that Lawsy carriage upgrade at the same time

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

I tried to print my own Lawsy carriage... but the extruder kept shifting. So thank you Printit for selling it smile order placed hopefully it makes it before the weekend.

Re: SD4 Extruder Carriage Mounting

I think this zip tie is used for shipping only, if you found the extruder is shifted, you have to check that
3 screws should mount the alum. bracket and
the X printed carriage together, there are 3x M3(or M2 not sure) tapping holes on alum. bracket, you are able
to tighten them from bottom of X carriage, not a big deal.
If your prints are shifted, you also have to check if the X timing belt is too loose?
