Topic: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

Greetings,
So I recently upgraded my hotend and carriages with the help of AZERATE and first few small prints came out decent. But not it seems like my X motor doesnt want to work. My belts are good but it jsut doesnt want to move and I dont want to keep trying to move it incase I strip something inside the motor. I never had my motor completely not want to move before.

Here is a vid

http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/h460/TakaPhotoartistry/th_20160218_124837_zpsedxvtcwy.mp4

with the motors turned off, I can move it by hand although not as smooth and easily as the Y. should I swap the Y and X motor and see if its the motor?

The X motor may be struggling because the belt is not lined up.
Have you checked your VREF for the X motor?

I adujested my VREF, and it moves again but even at max doesnt move as smooth and is quite noisy haha I already have greased it. Does the new bearings and rods just need to be broken in more?

TIP: linear bearings and rods don't get along with grease that well.  Wipe clean and try a lite oil on a rag.  Then slide back and forth many times till  by hand till things move smoothly.  Some break in is to be expected.

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

They should be. LM8UUs come shipped with 3-in-1 oil of some type...lithium grease is a no no for bearings since it is too think and constricts motion over time.
You made an awesome few upgrades simultaneously, so it will take some time to work out the kinks. Just have a little patience. No need to "break them in". It should be smooth motion, so this points to either a simple mechanical fix that is being overlooked (happens to us all big_smile), or the motor is failing. The latter is unlikely as you motor was working fine previously.

Turn the VREF back down on the X. If you keep forcing it to work at that setting, it can get hot enough to melt the left carriage.

Oh wow I had no idea about linear bearings and lithium grease! tongue So i wiped it off haha

So I turned my VREF on my X all the way down and nudged it higher and higher until its juuust able to move without binding. so I can move it manually, but when I start a print and moves into position, it binds near the center just for a instant. You can hear it in this vid i just took

I havent yet ran a full print yet, so Im not sure if it only happens in the start up. but Ill try run a full print and see if it happens during printing or just at a certain location

Break in wink seriously though you will find that by sliding the carriage back and forth with motors off several times it will loosen up.  Should you have to do this? In theory, no.  AZERATE is correct about that but some bearing rod combinations are just a little snug in the beginning.  All of this assuming you don't have something seriously out of alignment or a bent rod.

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

Ok so I finally got that grub screw out of the X motor pulley much thanks for the help. I flipped the pulley and put everything back together.
So I manually control the X in RH and it moves to the right but when I try to move it to the left, it doesnt move. It doesnt bind or anything, just doesnt make any sound, as if the motor isnt trying to move. But to the right.

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

So I searched around and found some similar problems. So I tried to swap the X and Y harness and the board and the X motor works fine in both directions but the Y only moves one way and wont move the other direction. So must be on the board? A setting or something?
I also tried adjusting the VREF on X but still nothing. Its strange that not only does it not move but makes no sound.

Do X and Y Home properly?

This may sound stupid, have you tried adjusting your belts? Particularly the y-axis belts can cause all kinds of problems when they get out of whack including only moving in one direction.

The Y does but X wont move to the back right, since thats the direction it wont move.

I jsut double checked my belts and they seem all good

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

Update!
So I just noticed that when I try to move my X to the right and doesnt move it says "echo:endstops hit: X:-30.90"

But its in the center no close to the endstop.

M119 shows this

13:30:29.459 : Reporting endstop status
13:30:29.459 : x_max: TRIGGERED
13:30:29.459 : y_max: open
13:30:29.459 : z_min: open

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

Sounds like a loose endstop connector or broken wire.  Triggered is actually open circuit.

ahhh I shall check for broken connection tomw!

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

Yup! so the connecting was bad so I resoldered it and it moves again. Well sort of. I moved when I controlled it in RH. But when I ran a test cube print. Nothing but constant binding. And now it binds when I control it in RH. Same as before but here is a vid of the sound it makes.

I set my VREF all the way do and keep turning it up but even at max it doesnt move. I double checked all my belts too

Ahhh Ok! I shall try that. I honestly was never 100% on how tight was too tight or too loose from watching the belt tension videos

Re: X motor not moving? Bad motor? (vid)

You want it tight enough that ithe belt doesn't twang when the motor changes directions. If in doubt, print a circle and look for dents around 0 degrees and 180 degrees (left and right side), that will tell you if your X axis is experiencing backlash.

I loosened my belts and no more binding or loud sound when moving my X. Man, all this time I thought I was properly checking my belts, when I was too tight the whole time.
Thanks everyone for the help!
