Topic: Printer Stops, Repetier Host Keeps Going

I'm having issues with my Solidoodle 4 where my printer will stop at a point and no longer responds to commands, but Repetier thinks the printer is still going at 100x speed.

I have tested with a new usb port, new usb cable, tested a number of repetier versions all with the same result.

50% of the time the print works perfectly. but the other 50% the print fails because of this reason. It will happen at different time during the print, it happens with different stl files, it happens with different slicers.

Has anyone else seen this before? I can add pictures and screenshots if that would help.

Make sure the printer is not plugged into a AC mains circuit that has a fan, heater, or fluorescent light, or motor connected to it as well. When the power is removed from inductive loads such as these they send a surge back through the line and this sometimes cause things like these printers to freak out. You can hear what i mean if you have an audio system plugged into the same circuit as a ceiling fan and you turn the fan off. You will hear a pop in the audio system.

Many other things could cause this but we need to eliminate externals first.

^what he said...

I had a portable AC unit cooling my workspace in the summer.  Kicking on and off would almost certainly freeze the printer with no apparent errors on RH.  Put it on a different circuit and hasn't happened since.

Re: Printer Stops, Repetier Host Keeps Going

Thanks for the advice Carl and Ironman. I have my printer plugged in to the same power strip as my PC. I'll move it to it's own and do some tests. Thanks a ton for the help! I don't have anything large like an AC or heater it's just a small home office.

Thanks again!

Make sure you check anything that is on the entire circuit that is shared with your office...not just the power strip.  It might be multiple rooms.  You can throw the circuit breaker to find out.

Re: Printer Stops, Repetier Host Keeps Going

Do you think plugging the printer in to a UPS with automatic voltage regulation(AVR) would help the issue?

Re: Printer Stops, Repetier Host Keeps Going

I have a UPS as well.  Frankly don't know if it has an AVR feature, but that did not prevent it from freaking out when the AC kicked in.

Re: Printer Stops, Repetier Host Keeps Going

a UPS may, or may not, help - it really does depend a lot on what else is drawing on the circuit from the breaker panel.

a basic example: we cant run both our toaster oven and the microwave at the same time - too much draw on the same circuit and the breaker will trip

3D printers are much more sensitive to power draw issues
