Topic: USB connector broke off

Hello everyone,
I hope someone here has had this problem and was able to fix it.
When I went to un plug the USB from the printer to move it the whole thing came off.
I was hoping someone here was able to fix that problem if it happened to them

Re: USB connector broke off

What do you mean by "whole thing broke off"? Off of the board, or the cable broke off in the terminal?

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

You know what he meant wink
Seems to me we both know a guy that did the exact same thing.  Jagowilson is the one to talk to about this.
The bigger question is what board do you have?

Re: USB connector broke off

Solidoode 2 basic.
The black connection part stripped from the 4 metal pins.
I have tried my best to put it back on, but no such luck

Re: USB connector broke off

This is what I am seeing.
Thank you for replying at all.
People really are the best support.

Sadly, I have to go to work. I will try to check on this periodicly.

Re: USB connector broke off

that's not as bad as I thought.

you could bend those back over and slide the plastic back over.

Re: USB connector broke off

looks like it. those seem easier to reinstall than the tiny USB-mini plugs, too. worst case scenario, you're going to be soldering a USB cable to your board for permanent use.

Re: USB connector broke off

I tried sliding it on a number of times with no luck.
And my skills with soldering the iron are terrible..
Are the pins supposed to go like an x or an =?

Re: USB connector broke off

See the direction they are bent towards each other top to bottom?  I'm not certain but would think they bend much further until pointing towards the board.  Then the plastic has a catch or some other means of retaining them.  Just imagine how they would have to bend as they got pulled out.

Re: USB connector broke off

Ouch. I had that happen to mine, except the shell stayed on and the plastic that goes over the four pins came out, so I couldn't get at it very easily.

I took some very narrow needle-nosed pliers and squeezed each pin, getting it as straight as possible, then slid the little @&/$:;& back on as carefully as possible.

I have since never removed the USB cable from the board. Maybe been a year or so, no problems.

Re: USB connector broke off

So make them point 90 degrees?
Then it should "click" into place, correct?

13

Re: USB connector broke off

maybe more they should almost fold back to themselves???? I'm guessing based on other connection styles

Re: USB connector broke off

And the company is taking weeks to respond to emails.
I will wait and see what they say

Re: USB connector broke off

They most likely won't get back to you.  even if they do it isn't something they will fix or replace.  I hate to say it but this is something you will have to fix yourself.
So I am looking at a plug in front of me and it looks like no bending really needed they just act like springs pushing out on the inside of the cord.  you just need to figure out how the little pointed ends sit in that plastic part.  I would guess there is a little hole for them to rest in.  Can you get a picture of the inside of the plastic part?

Re: USB connector broke off

How hard would it be to pull the metal part off?  Then get it back on with the plastic in place around the pins?

Re: USB connector broke off

Even with the metal off, the plastic is one piece

Re: USB connector broke off

I'm gonna find something with that same plug and tear it off.  That way I can step through reassembly.  That may take a bit but I'll get back to you.

Re: USB connector broke off

You are helping at all.
That is more than I could have hoped for

23

Re: USB connector broke off

So I pulled one off an old device that matched yours perfectly.  I will say getting those back in the plastic may be possible but it sure isn't easy.  That and your eyesight will have to be much better than mine and I don't need glasses.  One pin at a time maybe but 4 pins at once will be virtually impossible.  How do you feel about learning to solder?  It'll be much quicker and work just as well to solder a cord direct to the board.
Things you would need:
A cord that you could cut and strip
A soldering iron (nothing special $10 at walmart)
Some solder (probably included with the iron)
Willingness to learn a new skill.

Let me know how you'd like to proceed.

Re: USB connector broke off

I would be up for learning to solder.
It would be a nice new skill, and I cant see without glasses anyway.
I have the cord still that connects to the printer, would that work?

Re: USB connector broke off

Yep just decide how long you want it and then cut and strip the ends.
Do you own a soldering iron and have solder with flux in it?
