Topic: Needs some clarification...

Been a while.    Ok I want to do some upgrades but having some issues finding information.   

1 - whats better for a z replacement, threaded or threadless ballscrew?
2 - what does the bulldog extruder add?  I get that its a more powerful motor, but is it a really neccesary upgrade?
3 - i think my z motor might be going, lots of clicking when printing.  Is there a better motor upgrade for that?
4 - im going to be adding a power switch and an internal temp gauge once a build an enclosure, would like to add some fans also.  If i were to wire a circuit board inline to the power before the arduino board, would that cause any issues?  I just want something neat to attach the fans and temp probe too.

1) Threaded in my opinion. I've heard some reports of "slipping". That is the only reason I haven't tried it to be honest.
2) It demolishes moire as well. I recently reported my .9 degree motor mod here and I actually like it better than my Bulldog which is still awesome. Cheaper and faster to install with more common parts (printed carriages, wire bundles, etc.). RRD has also been avoiding emails and phone calls which while they would still sell you a Bulldog, personally turns me off to doing business with them anymore. Just my 2 cents.
3) That motor is a SM42HT33-1334A. Look into something like this as an alternative.

As long as your total current draw does not exceed the rating on the power supply you can add all the bells and whistles you want. Just leave some over hang for situations where everything may come on at once..

I assume you mean making like a power distribution board to go between your power supply and logic that will switch and control the 12/24 volts depending on the printer model?

Exactly ..... i bought a temp probe and i want to add a power switch and 2 or 3 fans that will turn on and off with the machine. 


Azerate - good to be back man, and I gotta say.  This entire community is helpful but it's amazing that I can always count on you replying with something immensely helpful.  Would you happen to have a link to the threaded screw you used?

I actually have not swapped a threaded rod...yet. I will in the near future, but haven't even done much research on which to choose.
Many prefer M5 rods for their mod over say M3. Perhaps this

You would of course need to cut the rod to length.

Well ....  i definitely wanted the threaded ball screw  ....... those screws and nuts are over $150.    holy crap.    and to switch out the extruder, is it just wiring and re calibrating or do you have to mess with anything else?

I can see the video just fine.

FWIW, I did a ball screw update a while a go and it works just fine.  I never bothered with an adapter, I simply popped the threaded insert out of the bed, then drilled a couple of holes to mount the ball nut.  BUT....

.... Something to take in consideration, is that the ball nut diameter is large, and it's also very tall.  It will interfere with the the cross rod that drives the "Y" axis.  I had to offset the ball screw forward a few mm to allow the nut to clear the cross rod.
