Topic: (SD4) Help with X carriage upgrade (Lawsy and modded X carriage) Pics

Ok so thanks to you all I was able to remove all the rods and have finished the Y carriages. But now Im stuck on the X carriage.
Im using Lawsy's carriage and a Lawsy's modded Carriage (I believe by xaqaria, but not sure) its modded to be used with a completely stock SD4 hotend and everything.

The Lawsy bearing holder pieces line up with the modded piece but the whole carriage doesnt line up to the original mounting on the plate.

The picture shows the three holes that the original carriage mounted.
then I added the upgraded carriage over to show the holes.

Am I suppose to drill new holes?

That is just a pulley rod is it not? You should just have to remove one of the rods the X carriage move back and forward on. Then remove that X end piece then the carriage should slip off.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!
Anycubic 4MAX best $225 ever invested.
Voxelabs Proxima SLA. 6 inch 2k Mono LCD.

Why axis rods should not have any pulley on them that you need to remove. They should just have snap ring or mounting block that holds them in place. Remove the ring or mounting block and they should slide right out. Is this an SD2 or other? You did not specify.

Ahh I completely forgot to put my model. I edited the title. Thanks

yes! my apologies i didnt know what they were called. But i bought a new hex screwdriver and was able to loosen the nut. my old screwdriver must have just been worn which made it snap in half, which made me assume that those nuts werent meant to be removed. But they are off and got everything on the Y axis good. But now I have a problem with the X carriage.

I will update my main post instead of starting a new one. So please reread the OP. any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ok, changing the original post tends to confuse things as one reads through the thread - but if I am reading correctly now - you are wondering how to mount the metal plate for the extruder to the new carriage?

I just marked and drilled new holes for mine - use a bit that is slightly smaller than 3mm so the screws will thread into the plastic and hold well. You don't need to drill all the way through, either - just deep enough to accept the screws used.

Use the existing holes in the carriage parts to assemble those, then mark & drill for the metal mounting plate. pretty easy.

and just an FYI - Solidoodle changed the hole spacing on that metal plate a couple of times - that is why there is no 'common' piece available for it.

Haha yeah sprry I just didn't want to clutter up the forums.
So I would be drilling 4 new holes? Seems like two in the front nearest to the hotend and two on that part that holds the bearings, right? As it seems the second part that holds the bearings hang over the plate.

no need to clutter - just continue on within the thread...

Ok, I guess I am confused on what you are trying to do here...

the metal plate only has 3 holes...so only 3 holes would need to be drilled...

if the plastic parts are not lining up correctly - maybe you have the bearing parts on the plate backwards (front in back, back in front?) it can be kinda hard to tell which is which...

Ok now I understand. I should forget the mounting holes in the carriage and drill holes into the carriage to match the three one the plate, rather than vise versa. Makes more sense. Easier to drill into plastic than metal. I'll check out how it lines up when I get off work. Thanks

Re: (SD4) Help with X carriage upgrade (Lawsy and modded X carriage) Pics

Take the aluminum plate off and disconnect the left fan that is on it. You don't need it. Keep the rear motor fan. You do not have to drill new holes into the carriage, if you don't want to.

Please see the following post for SD4 Lawsy Carriage installation:

Re: (SD4) Help with X carriage upgrade (Lawsy and modded X carriage) Pics

no problem. glad we could sort that out. smile

and yeah, drilling plastic is MUCH easier! LOL

Assemble the plastic parts so they are one solid assembly, then mark and drill for the 3 holes to mount that metal plate.

I have both of my SD4s on the Lawsy carriages - much better performance big_smile

Re: (SD4) Help with X carriage upgrade (Lawsy and modded X carriage) Pics

Personally I left off the aluminum piece altogether. I used the E3D holder and ran extra long screws through to the extruder. It's technically less solid but I've never had any movement issues and it's a lot cleaner.
