Re: Editing Settings in Makerbot, Replicator-G & Simplify3D software

I found that adding Raft and Supports does Not fix the Stair-step problem. sad
but having the Raft there helps getting the object started,
Not as much bed adjustment is needed to get first layers to stick.

The Raft does Not print Stair-step, but the large object Still Does . sad

Re: Editing Settings in Makerbot, Replicator-G & Simplify3D software

I installed Makerbot version-2.4 (the Old version) on a W-7 computer,
to see if it has same Stair-step problem, and it Does.
So I've determined that it's Not just the new 3.7 version that has the problem,
but All Makerbot software will not print large objects correctly on this printer !

( an object 80 x 100mm wide is 5 layers Higher on one side)

So, looks like I'm going to have to Live with the problem for now,
because I'm not going to change the Firmware just to Test for a possible solution. sad

Re: Editing Settings in Makerbot, Replicator-G & Simplify3D software

I have MB desktop 3 something installed on my 7 machine. I cant connect to the printer from it but I can slice and then put it on an SDcard and print it that way. I will try an 80 x 80 x 10 box with a 20% fill and see what I get.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

Re: Editing Settings in Makerbot, Replicator-G & Simplify3D software

Carl,
I noticed that your metal printer looks identical to the 'Wanhao model-4S'
I'm thinking maybe CTC got them from Wanhao ??
So maybe you could get something, to fix yours, from them ?

I tried Wanhao's slicer software for model-5, it looks good but would not connect to CTC printer.
Said there was a driver problem at install.
(I will try to get more info about that driver software)

The model-4S just used Rep-G,  and did not have special software like the 5 does, I think.

BTW: I really like the design of the Wanhao model-5S
A very Open and Simple design and appears to work well, need more reviews tho

Those machines all ship with sailfish. They use normal slicers like Repetier Host, Cura Host, and Simplify3d. They don't use a a binary protocol like the makerbots and their firmware do.

I saw they said the machines ship with Sailfish firmware. You don't have to use RepG for sailfish. RepG is not a slicer it is just an interface. Rep Host and Simpify3D are actually packages with both slicer and host and S3D is even listed as supported software.

??? The Replicator-G I have Also does the Slicing !  The file goes directly from Rep-G to the printer, thru the USB cable,
so it has to be doing the slicing also.
There is GUI slider graphics showing the % of slicing as it is done.

The slicer in Rep-G does a better Job, than the slicer in Makerbot, when doing large objects.

Re: Editing Settings in Makerbot, Replicator-G & Simplify3D software

repg has the slicer baked in to their software, but the slicer is still skeinforge or slic3r

61

Re: Editing Settings in Makerbot, Replicator-G & Simplify3D software

I never used RepG to slice. I used it to send the file to the printer or the SDcard. I do most of my slicing on Simplify3D as the quality blows away all free slicers. I only use Makerbot Desktop if I want to do dual since Simplify3D does not support dual color printing at least not the version I have which is 2.2.1.

carl do you use custom support or just the default support when slicing

I have only ever made one print that needed support and for that one I just used standard although I did tweak the interface layer to be less dense so it would break away easier and leave less marks on the surface.

It appears that ALL host software use those 2 slicers, (or variations of them) ?

My Rep-G is using Sheinforge-50,
which seems to be slower , but more accurate, than Slic3r
(by not accurate I mean the stair-step problem)

Simplify3d is not about ease of use, It is about control. It will allow you to control the temp of each and every layer or section of a print. You can control the speed of different sections. It allows you so many control features at a per layer/section level that the print quality you get is worth the price simply in the time and material you save. It has a feature that will show the entire build sequence on screen so you can see if there will be any errors before you actually print.
