Topic: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

As I've noted before; I only run stock software and do updates the week they are pushed (lets not get into the XYZ software argument).

I opened the XYZ software, update box opened, I clicked update.
Mid update, the XYZ software "stopped responding", ( windows error message box).
Waited awhile, clicked "close", everything was closed then...apparently the printer did not complete the update.  Re-started the computer, turned off the printer and back on.
Printer did not light up, display shows vertical black bars but is not lit.

That's it, nothing works.
Help call and ticket in but was wondering if this ever happened to anyone else?

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

This is probably not it, but maybe you somehow removed the firmware?
That's what happened after I flashed my printer before I installed it with repetier

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Mine did the same thing! I came here to find if anyone has found a solution yet.

The unfortunate thing, for me, is I just bought it yesterday and was only able to print one thing before this happened...

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Yes I assume the firmware was cleared and not updated...Im hoping they email me a file that either forces the firmware from windows (doubtful of this method as windows cant see it now) or they have me load it thru the hidden USB port somehow.
Worst case is I am under warranty so I return it.

Wow that really sucks.  I've dealt with support before...it gets very frustrating until you get lucky enough to get someone that speaks and understands English well.  I figured out my last fix myself after dealing with them for a month.
Lets hope we both get it resolved soon.

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Mine did the same thing, was looking to upgrade/flash the firmware but can't find any links to anything that works for the Duo

What about this solution?

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

I believe there is a method to reverting back to stock firmware after installing custom firmware.  Might need to google a few places to find some info.

Will post again if I find anything

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

I was trying to find something similar but nothing would be helpful in that manner, since my computer doesn't recognize it as a device. Without being able to connect to it I have found no other way to affect it...

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

I believe that there's a method on the forums at voltivo.com, to restore stock firmware after using custom.

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Even if your computer can't connect to it?

Have you tried selectively installing the arduino due driver by itself (the old one) from arduino's driver package?  When I was flashing it, my pc didn't see it until I did so, with the same problem as you have.

I have not, will try later and report back. Currently time to start 4th celebrating here. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

OMG Why don't they just ship the printers out with the Repetier stuff already loaded and ready to go ?!?!?

So as I said mine got bricked last night as well, mid-update... so I took the plunge and decided to go ahead and flash it over to use Repetier and after a bit of jiggery pokery I am back printing and now 100 times better than with the XYZ software and firmware.... it's like a whole new world now lol.

Big thing I've noticed is I don't have to have any glue or tape on the bed for the ABS to stick.... being able to set the temp on the bed and extruders is awesome !!! Not to mention I can now use any filament I want and even replace a spool in mid print if it runs out.

Quick Rundown of what I did on my DaVinci Duo:

1. Turned the printer off, unplugged the USB cable and removed the back panel to expose the mainboard
2. Used a pair of tweezers to short JP1
3. While still shorting JP1 I turned the power back on
4. Downloaded and installed Arduino 1.6.5 r2 for Windows ( this is where you get the USB Drivers )
5. Downloaded 2 more files: Arduino 1.5.8 Windows and Repetier Firmware 0.92 Master
6. Extracted both of the above files to the desktop
7. Turned the printer on, connected the USB cable and it showed up as a Bossa Com Port
8. Went to the Arduino 1.5.8 folder and ran the program, loaded the Repitier project and flashed it.
9. Using the new menu on the printer saved it to the EEPROM
10. Downloaded and installed the latest version of Repetier

At this point it's a matter of playing around to get the right settings for your printer. Calibration is about the same except for the units of measure are different.

It's working, I'm happy, and my fiance isn't complaining that I have a fancy doorstop anymore.

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Having problem flashing.  I don't know why after the flash is done; it will not boot into new firmware.
It says on Arduino:
Verify successful
Set boot flash true
CPU reset.

I reboot printer then STILL have 2 bars on LCD.  What am i doing wrong?

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

You have the settings right in Arduino ???

Make sure you are using the Arduino 1.5.8 to flash with, for some reason the later versions wouldn't flash mine right

21

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Yes, I've followed that video using Arduino 1.5.8 but printer won't take firmware.
I tried removing SD card and flash; and even tried flashing using WinXP... no dice.
Each time I shorted J1 jumper to erase flash; which works since Arduino recognize the port.  It just won't take the firmware.

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

Try this one, it's the only ZIP I have uncompressed so it is prolly the one I used...

I'll leave that link up till the weekend in case anyone else wants to grab it.

Ok reporting back.

I really have no idea what I am doing wrong but I have tried flashing my printer to as suggested to fix this but I for some reason can't get it to work. How do I know if I bricked it?

If bricked it wont show up in your device manager even after using the erase jumper.

Re: Printer "bricked" mid firmware update

My understanding is that when it showed the two bars across the screen it was bricked... if you can manage to load the USB drivers and get it to be recognized you've got a chance.... Shorting out JP1 just wipes everything and will give you the bars on the screen.

I had issues at first and read somewhere to load the most recent version of Arduino to get the USB drivers. Once I installed that and shorted JP1, I was able to unplug the USB cable and reconnect it and it showed up as a Bossa Communications Port or something to that effect.

I have a question though and it's perhaps a bit late for me to go back to... but...

I noticed that during the process it shows up on COM5 for me everytime whereas I know that the XYZWare is looking on COM3 for the printer.... is there a way to change the port number perhaps and get it to COM3 so the XYZWare will find it ???

Thinking maybe if that can be done you might be able to do the firmware update like you normally would....

just a thought
