Topic: Raising temps...

Okay, so NOTHING is sticking to the heated bed of my SD Pro!!!  I'm @ 200 Extr/100Bed.  I think that about 12 more degrees on the bed and 5-10 on the extruder wiould melt the ABS better.  Anyone have an answer. (And yes, I've tried hair spray, doublestick tape, painter's tape, etc.,...just fyi, lol!)

I'm using the z tab set screw to work with initial z tab start spacing...it appears that I have gotten the spacing correct, although it looks a little flat, which makes me think that I have it a little too close....however, it's the furthest setting that I can get to "stick" to the printer bed.  I'm testing even as I write this.  It's the ONLY problam I foresee that I have left at present because everything else seems to be working just fine....:)

Re: Raising temps...

Okay, so this is bullshit!  The damn printer bed is for SHIT!  Why isn't it sticking?!!!  Damn printer extruder set up to 208 and the bed to 105.  STILL no sticking.   How the HELL am I supposed to print with a faulty printer bed???  Fix the damn thing!!!  I

Okay, so I REALLY upped the temps, and guess what....it's sticking...but at 118 on the bed and 213 on the extruder.  Makes me think one of three things....software not reporting correct temps, temp around the printer affecting printer bed, or filament is not uniform...ideas???

Re: Raising temps...

What filament are you using?  Sometimes some sticks better than others.  It might be worth getting a thermocouple to verify the thermistor.  One way to tell if the filament is getting cool is if you can see gear marks when extruding into air.  So you are any of that at 195, or is it smooth?

Is it reading the bed temp is 118 or that's what you set it to?  I think most people's printers never get above 105 without a towel covering it.

Re: Raising temps...

Windex works for me.  Alcohol and acetone also.

Re: Raising temps...

Back to no sticking.  Bed level (I'm an engineer, the damn thing is level, okay, lol)!  Temps adjusted up. Have tried over 70 different z set screw adjustments in .05mm increments. I really think that the kapton tape idea sucks.  I'm gonna start looking for an alternative solution to this dilemma.  Really tired of poor performance...

NOTHING sticks @ 105.  OR @ 100 as recommended...

Have you verified the temp of the bed manually?

I mean is the bed actually getting to 118 where you said it was sticking?  It generally has a hard time reaching even 100 when it is not enclosed. That is why I was surprised it was getting to 118. I set mine to 110 all the time so it is running all the time and often it floats around 99 when I remove the towel.

Try homemade abs glue smeared on the bed. (Acetone+ abs) search around.

Re: Raising temps...

Well, guys (and ladies), what I have learned today is that the Solidoodle printer is actually a prototype that is sold so that people can "tinker"with them for hours on end.  SOOOOO...in that light, I'll take my lumps, recalibrate my expectations, and go to bed.  I'll tackle this when I have time.  Personally, I'm too busy to spend hours on end "playing".  I just want a product that works.  A little rewording of the sales pitch is in order.  No doubt it's a tinkerer's dream, so all in all it's a cool product...just not completely reliable.

In that light, I shall "calm myself" as someone suggested, swallow my $650, and play with my "toy" now and again.  Meanwhile, I need to look for a product that actually produces things in a reliable and timely manner as I have some deadlines to keep...

I'll play later...back to the "real" world, lol!

Thanks for all the input!  Y'all all rock!

Sincerely,
Kev

Almost everyone on this board had at least some issues when they started.  The SD2 is a decent printer and I think once the issue is addressed you will be very happy.

Re: Raising temps...

One fingerprint on the Kapton will cause a non stick operation.

I have the SD2 with the cover and can tell you that it gets nice a toasty with no drafts.
Now your moving your bed temps up. I'm moving them down and operate @ around 75c with the covers on.   Hope to even drop this some more in the future as part of calibration.

My printers like the use of the hair spray.  One spray is good for like 4-6 prints then reapply.   Hope this helps you.

Thanks everyone.  I am hoping to solve the problems as I go along.  Actually I got a single "adapter" to print and stick last night after I posted my "frustrations".  My problem was bed leveling according to the X/Y movement of the extruder.  It appears that on my unit, the extruder X/Y movement is not exactly level in and of itself (rods off a little?).  Anyway, once I "unlevelled" the bed, it worked better.  Back at it today.  Last day before I have to work in the REAL world, lol!

Thanks for all the input.  This forum, and those in it ROCK!

I'll update what happens.....Thanks again, everyone for encouraging words!

Glad to hear you got it working. A common problem is a warped bed which is probably why it seems to be off a little.  One way to address this is to print on a glass plate.

Re: Raising temps...

My stock Kapton tape sucked as far as sticking. Rubbing it down with aceton made things stick to it, after much frustration. So try another kapton, or just a small rub over with aceton.

Re: Raising temps...

I'm telling you, I was one of the holdouts for kapton and cleaning even when it was ripped I had pretty good success with it.  But after switching to glass and hairspray (just to get the changeover time down) it is SOOO much better than printing on Kapton for me.  I don't know why they don't just start shipping printers with 2 glass plates and some clips.

I agree. After going to glass, my level of frustration is way down and the quality of my prints is way up.

Re: Raising temps...

Another for glass and hairspray. It works so much better and is so easy, it seems silly not to use it.

24

Re: Raising temps...

I use a 1/4" thick piece of glass and White Rain hair spray. usually one shot will last through 4 or 5 prints. I use a single edge razor blade to clean the glass and even to get parts off while the bed is still hot. Works good.

I use ABS plastic and the bed is 95C degrees. I run the hot end at 195C to start and it drops to 193C on second layer.

Re: Raising temps...

Going through my 30meters of kapton tape without any problems, even have black-belt in kapton changing atm smile
Will switch to glass when I run out, but I for one can say that kapton tape works.
